A place guests return to

Guests highlight the peaceful lake setting and come back year after year with family and friends
Upper Pine-insula Lodge is made for lake days, family time, and groups who want room to spread out. Swim and fish from the quiet Sporley Lake shoreline, take out the kayaks or paddle boats, gather around the fire, or settle onto the wraparound porch with a view of the water. With three levels of living space, nine beds, and room for up to 15 guests, everyone can spend time together without feeling crowded.

The space
Set on a large lakefront property, Upper Pine-insula Lodge works especially well for extended families, multiple families traveling together, groups of friends, and multigenerational vacations. The house offers three separate indoor living areas, making it easy for a large group to enjoy time together while still having plenty of room to spread out.

The waterfront is one of the highlights of the property. Sporley Lake is quiet and clear, with a shallow sandy area near shore that is especially enjoyable for swimming and playing in the water. Guests can fish from the dock or bring a boat and use the public DNR launch on the lake. Three kayaks, two paddle boats, fishing poles, and a variety of life jackets are provided seasonally.

The wraparound porch is another favorite gathering place, with space to eat, play games, read, or relax overlooking the lake. The large grassy yard offers additional room to spread out, and the fire pit is perfect for evenings outside. Six chairs are provided around the fire pit, so larger groups may wish to bring a few folding chairs.

Inside, the lodge is stocked for real family vacations rather than simply overnight stays. The kitchen includes cookware, dishes, utensils, and supplies for preparing meals for a crowd, while board games, video games, smart TVs, and other activities provide plenty to do during rainy days or quieter evenings. A Blackstone propane griddle is available year-round, with propane, cooking utensils, and seasoning oil provided.

The home sleeps up to 15 guests, but not all sleeping areas are private bedrooms. The basement includes a private queen bedroom and a living room with a pullout couch. The first floor has a private queen bedroom and another living room with pullout couch. Upstairs, there is a mostly private queen bedroom with wooden shutters opening to the living room below, plus a loft with three full beds, a twin trundle, and a couch that converts to a queen bed.

The lodge is also a convenient home base for exploring the central U.P. Gwinn is about 10 miles away for groceries, restaurants, and everyday essentials, while the K.I. Sawyer Shoppette is just two miles from the house for quick trips. Marquette is about a 30-minute drive away, with restaurants, breweries, shopping, beaches, hiking, and other attractions. The location also works well for day trips to destinations such as Kitch-iti-kipi, Fayette Historic State Park, Munising, and Pictured Rocks.

For guests visiting for snowmobiling or ORV riding, the Michigan DNR trail system can be accessed directly from the property, so there is no need to trailer machines to a trailhead. The large parking area accommodates multiple vehicles and typically one to two trailers; guests bringing especially large trailers are encouraged to check with us in advance about the best parking arrangement.

Upper Pine-insula Lodge is in a peaceful residential lake setting rather than complete isolation. Neighboring homes are visible, and guests may occasionally hear normal outdoor activity nearby. After 10:00 PM, we ask that outdoor noise be kept to talking level out of consideration for our neighbors.

Wi-Fi is provided, but because this is a rural lake property, internet service can occasionally be slower or less reliable than guests may be accustomed to at home. Guests who need a strong connection for intensive remote work should keep this in mind when booking.
