The Layer Ito - One of Conde Nast Traveler's top Airbnbs in Japan. This mid-century home has been deeply cared for since it was built by highly skilled craftsmen in 1968.
If your dates are not available in Ito, we are happy to introduce our sister property, The Layer Atami Garden. This spacious, recently renovated 1930s villa with a private garden and large onsen bath near Kinomiya Shrine in Atami is also available to book on Airbnb.
The space
Come relax in our traditional Japanese home in the retro onsen town of Ito on the Izu Peninsula. Our renovation accentuates the home's original features, while adding layers of design details and comfort.
There is a large Towada stone and hinoki-lined bath, a dining room, and a karaoke room with a nod to Ito's showa-era "snack bar” (スナックバー) culture.
The house has four main rooms, with two used for sleeping/living, one for dining, and one for karaoke/lounging/relaxing/working and TV.
The house accommodates up to six people in two tatami rooms separated by sliding doors.
The kitchen is appointed with all that you need for cooking for large groups, and there is an outdoor Weber gas BBQ grill.
The large bath has a private garden and dressing room.
The house is only reachable by climbing a steep set of 40 stairs (see pictures). We apologize that it is not suitable for guests with mobility access needs. This is the only way to reach the house. 40 stairs is equal to about two stories.
You are welcome to park on the street at the bottom of the stairs that lead up to the house. We will send you a picture of where to park a few days before your stay.
We appreciate how vividly and thoughtfully our guests have described their experiences in our reviews. Please feel free to read them and ask us any questions.
No parties or events allowed
No uninvited guests allowed to stay overnight
No smoking
No pets
No fireworks
The house is also nestled into a STEEP hillside in the countryside, and so nature's smaller creatures occasionally make an appearance.
Since it is an older house, it requires being treated with care, gentleness, and respect
If you take public transportation, please take a taxi from the station to the house. While the walk is only 10-15 minutes, the hill as you arrive is quite steep.
After you're settled in, it's easy to walk to town. The walk to and from Ito town is more pleasant if you walk through Mega Don to get to the oceanside road. This road can also be reached through the 7-11 parking lot. The "service" road that you typically drive on is not that pleasant for walking (no sidewalk), so adding 1-2 minutes to your walk to use a sidewalk is probably worth it.
We will send you taxi directions in both English and Japanese, as well as a location pin. It can be a little hard to find at first, though we promise to provide detailed directions.
**We follow Japanese law with regard to requesting guest identification prior to your arrival. We will send a form for you to fill out, or you can share the information via Airbnb's messaging system.
**We are happy to welcome babies and children, but we do not provide baby chairs. We do have a Baby Bjorn bed available at the house.
**Please read all house rules (above) before booking
Guest access
Guests will have use of the entire home.
We welcome short term and long-stay guests for up to one month.
