THE LAYER | ATAMI GARDEN
A private onsen villa with an enclosed garden in Atami — 40 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen.

This beautifully restored heritage home has three tatami bedrooms, spacious engawa, a vinyl record lounge, a dining room, and a well-appointed kitchen. The onsen bath has Osaji amenities, and yukata.

Enjoy complete privacy for up to 6 guests in this home near Kinomiya Shrine.

Please be aware there is no on-site parking. The nearest public parking lot is a 13-minute walk.

The space
Experience Atami's charm in your own private, restored Japanese traditional onsen villa set in the beautiful hillside neighborhood of Nishiyamachō, near Kinomiya Shrine.

Please note: there is no parking available at this 1936 villa.

THE LAYER | ATAMI GARDEN is surrounded by greenery in every season. Inside, original architectural details have been perfectly preserved: intricate woodwork, handcrafted woven ceilings, and carved panels depicting Mount Fuji. Reimagined as a home shaped by multiple eras, the interiors move from mid-century and warm 1970s influences into the present.

Guests are invited to slow down and settle into our relaxed record lounge, three peaceful tatami bedrooms, and a large onsen bath finished with hinoki and Tajimi tile, with bamboo swaying slowly outside the windows.

This is a home where you can experience both traditional craftsmanship and contemporary comforts.

We can accommodate up to six people in three tatami rooms. Two rooms are on the second floor, separated by fusuma (sliding doors). There is a more private tatami room on the first floor. There are two toilets on the first floor, and a separate dressing room with two sinks, and a large shower-bath room with onsen hot spring water.

Amenities and conveniences include:
- Deluxe double futons
- Yukata (Japanese-style robes)
- Osaji soaps, shampoo, conditioner
- Towels and slippers
- Coffee and tea
- Light kitchen supplies (oil, salt, pepper)
- High-speed internet
Please see the amenities section for a full list

THE LAYER | ATAMI GARDEN is our most recent restoration, inspired by our experiences hosting guests at THE LAYER | ITO.

Atami's History:
From the early 1600s, when Tokugawa Ieyasu sought restorative waters in Atami’s hot springs, through the literary pilgrimages of Osamu Dazai and Yukio Mishima, to its rapid postwar growth, Atami has been a retreat inspiring creativity, romance, and relaxation for more than 400 years.

We look forward to hosting you in beautiful, seaside Atami!

Guest access
Guests will have access to the entire home and garden. There is no parking available on site. The nearest lot is a 10-15 minute walk or 3 minute taxi.

Other things to note
Since it is an older house, it requires being treated with care, gentleness, and respect.

There is NO PARKING available at the house. The nearest parking lot is a 10-minute walk. Please message us with questions and we will be very happy to answer.

We will send you taxi directions in both English and Japanese, as well as a location pin and visual directions.

If you take public transportation, please take a taxi from Atami or Kinomiya station to the house. It is a long walk with luggage, and uphill.

After you're settled in, it's easy to walk to town in about 15-20 minutes. Taxis are available via Uber and GOTaxi apps.

Please note: Atami is a hillside town with very little parking available throughout the town itself. We are very happy to provide you with information to help you plan to enjoy Atami by foot, via public transportation, or by taxi.

We will be available for questions as you arrive.

No parties or events allowed
No uninvited guests allowed to stay overnight
No smoking

The house is also nestled into a hillside garden neighborhood in the countryside, and so nature's smaller creatures occasionally make an appearance.

It is common in Japan to have rates that reflect the number of guests staying at the house.

***We must follow Japanese law with regard to requesting guest identification prior to your arrival. I will send a form for you to fill out, or you can share the information via Airbnb's messaging system.

***We are happy to welcome babies and children, but we do not provide baby chairs.
