THE LAYER | ATAMI GARDEN
A privately enclosed 1936 villa in Atami — 40 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen.
Three tatami bedrooms, a lush seasonal Japanese garden, and complete privacy for up to 6 guests. The entire property is yours.
This heritage home dates to a moment when Atami had emerged as a vibrant onsen resort town. Set in a quiet hillside neighborhood near Kinomiya Shrine, complete with Osaji amenities and yukata, come enjoy a stay that feels timeless, intimate, and deeply restorative.
The space
Come experience Atami's charm in your own private, restored Japanese traditional home set in the beautiful hillside neighborhood of Nishiyamachō.
The Layer | Atami Garden is situated above the town, surrounded by greenery in every season. Inside, original architectural details remain: intricate woodwork, handcrafted woven ceilings, and carved panels depicting Mount Fuji. Reimagined as a home shaped by multiple eras, the interiors move from mid-century and 1970s influences into the present.
Guests are invited to slow down and settle into our relaxed record lounge, three peaceful tatami bedrooms, and a generous bath finished with hinoki and Tajimi tile.
This spacious house offers verdant views from the lounge and dining room, bright engawa spaces on both levels, a vibrant and comfortable dining room, and a well-appointed kitchen, creating the experience of a Japanese home where traditional craftsmanship and contemporary comforts coexist.
We are delighted to accommodate up to six people in three tatami rooms. Two are on the second floor, separated by fusuma (sliding doors). There is a more private tatami room on the first floor. There are two toilets on the first floor, and a separate dressing room with two sinks, and a large shower-bath room.
Amenities and conveniences include:
- Deluxe double futons
- Yukata (Japanese-style robes)
- Osaji soaps, shampoo, conditioner
- Towels and slippers
- Coffee and tea
- Light kitchen supplies (oil, salt, pepper)
- High-speed internet
Please see the amenities section for a full list
THE LAYER | ATAMI is our most recent project, inspired by the wonderful experiences we have had hosting guests at THE LAYER | ITO.
Atami's History:
From the early 1600s, when Tokugawa Ieyasu sought restorative waters in Atami’s hot springs, through the literary pilgrimages of Osamu Dazai and Yukio Mishima, to its rapid postwar growth, Atami has been a retreat inspiring creativity, romance, and relaxation for more than 400 years.
We look forward to hosting you in beautiful, seaside Atami!
Other things to note
Since it is an older house, it requires being treated with care, gentleness, and respect.
We will send you taxi directions in both English and Japanese, as well as a location pin and visual directions.
We will be available for questions as you arrive.
If you take public transportation, please take a taxi from Atami or Kinomiya station to the house. It is a long walk with luggage, and uphill.

There is no parking available at the house. The nearest parking lot is a 10-minute walk. Please message us with questions and we will be very happy to answer.
