The Alt Haus is a simple space to be, to dream, to create, to rest. A place for writers, walkers and solo explorers to stay in all seasons.

Located on the high moor of the Penwith peninsula at the westernmost end of Cornwall. Wild and raw, circled by massive views of land and sea and sky, with wonderful walks.

The space
A simple, small cabin made from wood, well insulated with sheep's wool and clad in corrugated tin. Large glass sliding doors open out onto a south facing wooden deck and your own private garden. The living room contains a daybed, desk/table, reading lamp, bookcase and small, well equipped kitchen. There is a mezzanine sleeping platform with double bed above the living space and a shower room at the back (there's a proper flush loo in the courtyard next to the main house). The cooker and hot water boiler are electric, the fridge a small standard size with an icebox, and The Alt Haus is heated by a wood-burner.

Guest access
The cabin has its own secluded garden and entrance and is separated from the main house and garden by a shelter belt of trees and bushes.

Other things to note
The Alt Haus is WiFi free and a locked box facility is available for your phone if you'd like a complete retreat.

There's 4G mobile phone coverage for most networks in the cabin. If you've an important online meeting or can't get online with your phone ask me about using the house and its WiFi.

This beautiful, remote location is only 4 miles from Penzance. A rural bus can drop you 1.4 miles away followed by a 30 minute walk along quiet country lanes to the cabin.

Paper maps are provided in the cabin for walking on the moor or on the country lanes as mobile maps are unreliable.

The bed is on a mezzanine platform and accessed via a steep ladder. Although the hut is a retreat space for solo guests the mattress is a comfortable double from John Lewis.

There's a flush loo a short distance from the cabin in the courtyard next to the main house, and an old-fashioned chamber pot for nights of wild weather when you don't want to go out!

The shower and wash basin are inside the cabin. The shower room and kitchen have a head height of 6'4" and the shower 6'1".

A basket of logs and kindling are provided for the wood burner with more available for a small extra charge.

Neighborhood highlights

You'll be right on the edge of the moor with incredible views all around, many wonderful walks and access to Neolithic sites (stone circles, quoits, the remains of old villages). The North coast and Southwest coastal path can be reached in about 45 minutes by walking over the moor, taking a bus or by a ten minute drive. You'll find maps and walking suggestions in the hut. The road is very quiet and the skies are dark -- on a clear night the stars are amazing and the Milky Way visible. From the cabins garden you'll have one of the best outlooks in Cornwall (weather permitting!) with a panoramic view of the sea and the whole of Mount's Bay, including St Michael's Mount. Penzance is only four miles away for cafe's, restaurants, cinema, the Jubilee seawater & geothermal pools, and art galleries. St Ives and the Tate are nine miles. This is a perfect place to retreat and feel as though you're in the the back of beyond, and yet easily access culture, beaches and good food.

My work: Writer
I'm half-hermit and half-extrovert so living on the moor near to lively Penzance is a perfect location. I'm a poet and research student, and love books, arty films, walking on the moor, and sea swimming. I'm obsessed with cabins and the spaces we occupy, so as a host my intention has been to build and hold a beautiful space for visitors who want restorative alone time.
