This is one of the few places in the area with free parking.
A winding 18 minutes through the forest from Manjimup, The Woodsman is the perfect isolated rustic escape for couples, creatives, friends or small families to enjoy open-fireplace romance, the beautiful forests, river, and the historic Mill, while being easy driving distance to Manjimup, Pemberton, and the greater Southern Forests wine and produce region.

The space
The Woodsman is a two-bedroom original 1939 timber Mill Worker's cottage in a remnant settlement based around a historic steam-powered sawmill, hidden in the hinterland of the Southern Forests' timber and truffle country.
A dark and moody King, and light and bright Queen bedroom are each layered in European flax linen bedding to keep you warm in Winter and cool in Summer, and the coziness and charm of the original Mill worker's cottage is amplified by the high ceilings, romantic open fireplace and original wood-burning kitchen stove.
Both bedrooms have ceiling fans for the occasional hot days, however the cabin does not have air-conditioning.
Snuggle up in one of the comfy sofas with your favourite book over coffee in the morning, or with your favourite person to watch the passing wildlife over a glass of the wine in the evening. The open fireplace can be lit during the cooler months to dial up the romance and cosy vibe.
The bathroom remains a rustic ode to cabin-life, but the slightly wonky room is equipped with a deep claw-foot tub for long soaks on cold nights, with a shower over the tub.
This ‘slow stay’ forest escape is designed for you to unplug from daily life and with no Wi-Fi (and limited reception for providers other than Telstra) you have the perfect excuse to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with those that matter most.
Books, board games, and 70 acres of forest trails to explore are a beautiful starting point to fill your days, and the remote location makes a surprisingly central base to explore the wider South West region. We stock a basic pantry of salt, pepper, sugar, olive oil, loose leaf teas and locally roasted coffee (with stovetop or French press options).
Outside the cabin there is an East-facing front porch, perfect for morning coffee in the sun, and an expansive West-facing deck, with room for dinner alfresco to watch the sunset migration of kangaroos through the village.
Bookings for Autumn will see the best of the South-West's Autumn colours on your journey, and Winter guests can enjoy truffle-hunting and tasting tours at many of the region's famed Truffieres or explore the many rivers, lakes and waterfalls in the area.
Guest access
The Woodsman is one of ~20 remaining timber cottages within the original mill settlement. At Christmas or in school holidays the village may be nearly full of guests or owners, and at other times you may not see anyone at all during your stay.
The distance between cottages allows for privacy, so if you don’t want to leave your bubble it is absolutely possible to feel like it’s just you and the forest.
Our lovely caretaker is always available in an emergency though, and lives on-site across the village.
Manjimup is the closest town and fuel supply, and we suggest stocking up here or along your journey from Perth ahead of your stay.
Other things to note
Because the cabin is in largely original condition, it has some quirks that mean it may not be suitable for all guests. Before booking, please be aware of the following:
- The remote location.
The closest major town is Manjimup, approx. 18 mins away. Stock up with supplies there before you arrive – those cosy beds are hard to leave!
- Steps.
There are steps to both the front and rear entry of the house, and a step-into shower over bath which may not suit those with mobility issues.
- No WiFi.
Unplug. Breathe. Connect. There is however a TV and assorted DVDs for rainy days.
- Children and infants.
We love children, but aren’t able to offer any amenities, so if you are booking The Woodsman please note you will need to provide a travel cot/highchair and anything else your littles may need. Please be mindful of the open fireplace and natural, unsecured river access when considering a booking.
- Wildlife.
Our forest location means that there is always abundant wildlife of all types. At different times of the year there may be insects or even the occasional mouse or possum seeking shelter. Encountering snakes or lizards in the forest is rare but possible.

Neighborhood highlights
The Woodsman is hidden off the Highway in an enclave in the forest. The settlement is surrounded by regrowth Jarrah and Karri which are slowly reclaiming the old mill structures, and bringing stillness to the once-thriving Mill town.
Abundant history is still on display and can be enjoyed via the many old forestry trails wound through the area.
The Southern Forests is a food bowl region offering wineries, truffières, honey, fresh produce including apples, cherries and avocados, as well as a variety of artists and creatives.
