The space
Step back in time with a stay at our unique attic apartment, steeped in history and character. Once an attic warehouse, this space preserves the charm of 15th-century wooden beams, which have been carefully exposed and integrated into the interior design. Refurbished in the 1990s into a cozy one-bedroom living space, it maintains the rustic atmosphere and original spirit of an old-world warehouse.
Located in a historic stone building that dates back to the 14th century, this apartment is the only surviving structure from a medieval Russian trade settlement that once featured six residential properties from the 14th to the 19th century. In 1537, it reappeared in Riga’s real estate records as the residence of Ernst van Mengden, a member of the distinguished Baltic German von Mengden family, whose legacy in Livonia stretches back to the 15th century.
Guests frequently highlight the unique blend of historic elements and modern comforts, noting the apartment’s warm, welcoming ambiance and authentic atmosphere. The preserved wooden beams and storied past create an unmatched experience, perfect for history enthusiasts or those seeking a distinctive stay in the heart of Old Town. Embrace the opportunity to be part of centuries-old history while enjoying the cozy, well-appointed space designed to make your stay unforgettable.

Other things to note
Firstly, there is no elevator to access our apartment, and you'll need to ascend a historic spiral staircase from third to the fourth floor (see pictures). This staircase has been a part of our house's history for centuries, and it adds a truly special touch to your stay. However, it's worth noting that the space within this spiral staircase is quite limited, with a width of only 60 cm and a height of 170 cm.
We acknowledge that this can pose a challenge, particularly when carrying larger or heavier luggage. To make your journey to our apartment more manageable, we recommend packing lightly or using smaller suitcases.
Once you've made it up to the apartment, you'll find a comfortable and inviting space waiting for you. We hope you have a fantastic stay and enjoy all that our Mansard has to offer.
As our apartment is located in a live tourist area and historic building, you may hear the sounds of happy people outside and sometimes the guests below you. This is part of the charm and character of our home, and we hope you will enjoy the experience of staying in a building with so much history. However, if you are sensitive to noise, we recommend bringing earplugs or a white noise machine to help you relax and enjoy your stay.
We also want to remind our guests to be mindful of the noise they make, especially during evening hours and when using the stairs in the bedrooms area. This will help ensure that our downstairs guests are not disturbed.
Please note that two of the bedrooms in the apartment are on top of one another and are not separated by a door (please see the pictures above). Tall people should take care, as the lower edge of the wooden wheel in living area is only 1.80 m from the floor.
Additionally, please be aware that the apartment is split into three levels with internal staircases (please pay attention to the photos). As such, the place may not be completely safe for children under 3.
Thank you for choosing to stay with us and we look forward to hosting you. We hope you'll have a wonderful time in our historic house and in the city
