Neighborhood highlights

Looking out the picture windows of our living room, or walking out to the deck, is a special treat to the eyes and pacifier to the soul. Never have we been so closely in-tune with the beauties of nature at such a close proximity. Although the seasons here are clearly distinguishable, often times the panorama we witness change multiple times during the day.

Living at Station Camp Getaway has truly been a blessing. We previously lived in an ancient volcanic crater in the mountains of Panama and a coastal town in central Chile and although each of these places had their own particular beauty, nowhere have we been more excited to wake up than in this little Appalachian Valley that incorporates Murphys Ford Road.

On clear nights we have wonderful starlit skies. Full moons creep in slowly over the mountain behind us. Summers fill the darkness with lightning bugs and dusk and dawn often bring as many as 6 deer that at times cross our yard, or meander the border of the lake, or spring cross our fields. Sunrises slowly illuminate the mountain tops behind our field and as it lowers down their frontal side, the lake reflects the golden hues on its glassy surface.

Summer brings many hummingbirds to our feeders as they have lost fear of our presence. Brown thrashers, Cardinals, Bluebirds, Kingfishers, Swallows and Bluejays are frequent visitors we admire and “converse” with. In the winter, huge bands of Blackbirds flow in coordinated multitudes of hundreds of specimens dancing in and out of the woods or choreographing beautiful loops in the sky.

Our human community is made up of friendly and tranquil neighbors which seems characteristic of most Estill County residents. We’ve been impressed that wherever we go in this region of KY, people are so welcoming, friendly and helpful.

Irvine is known for the fanatics of Morel mushrooms and the enticing searches for mineral and lapidary finds. As is the case in most of KY, hunting offers an abundance of game. However, the common thread in all these activities and most other sources of pastimes, is the emphasis on enjoying the outdoors in an area that is blessed with so many natural wonders. With the Daniel Boone National Forest going right through this region, we are just a hop and a skip from a whole host of touristic attractions and well marked trails for hikers, bikers, horseback riders, bird watchers and nature lovers in general.

The basic necessities can be found in Irvine, but there are increasing number of alternatives in Berea, Richmond, Winchester and Lexington, all between 30 minutes to an hour away.

Solid country principles, mixed with an old and unique mountain culture still prevail in this region where “the Bluegrass meets the Appalachians”. In essence this means life in Irvine is still very aware of the natural surroundings, but sizable urban centers are a “stone’s throw” away and thus we have access to the best of both worlds.
