🌿 Sjötorp – peace, history and a lake holiday without neighbours

Welcome to Sjötorp – a unique summer place on the shore of the large lake of Vanajavesi. This completely private courtyard offers a complete break from everyday life: no border neighbours, just a lake, forest and silence.

You will stay in an ambient Ostrobotnian granary, which was originally built in the 1780s. The spirit of the old building is combined with functional and versatile equipment – you can stay here for longer.

The space
🛏 Accommodation and facilities

There are several buildings in the yard:

Historic granary with 4 bedrooms, hallway, and kitchen.

New summer kitchen with indoor kitchen and living room. Outside, a large patio and barbecue shelter with stainless steel counter tops, running cold and hot water, several grills and a pizza oven – a real dream for a cook.

Small single-heated wood-fired sauna on the shore with shower and direct access to the pier. Note! Long heating time (about 4 hours). The sauna is suitable for people who want to focus on sauna and heating the sauna separately, as it is done following strict routines. The sauna bathing is started at a low temperature (about 50 degrees) and the temperature rises little by little with the steam.

If necessary, you will find machines and tools for tinkering in the warehouse.

Campfire site right next to the beach.

Puucee (Biolan composting toilet) in the forest near the granary.

🔥 Things to do and experiences
Sjötorp invites you to enjoy nature and do just as much as you like:
Rowing, fishing and crayfishing.
Swimming and sauna in the lake.
Berry and mushroom picking.
Blazing salmon or campfire sausages.
Peaceful evenings enjoying the lake landscape.

Guest access
The whole summer place and the boat are at your disposal.

The nearest services are in the village of Iittala, just a 15-minute drive away.

About 1.5 kilometres before the holiday home there is a locked gate from which a forest road begins. The road can be driven with a car with normal ground clearance.

Other things to note
🏠The sauna is once-heated and heats up slowly in about 4 hours. The wait is rewarded, as the stones of the stove store a huge amount of heat. Since the heater is not heated during sauna bathing (as in continuously heated heaters), the room temperature can initially be only 30–50°C. This makes sauna bathing very pleasant, and when water is thrown into the stone chamber, the steam is soft and rich in oxygen.

🦌 In the middle of nature
Wildlife such as wolves and lynxes occasionally roam the area. Encounters are rare, and people always act calmly and use common sense in nature.

💦 Well water
Both kitchens have 8 litres of clean domestic water in a container, which can be filled at the S-Market in the village of Iittala or at the St1 petrol station if needed. I do not recommend drinking well water from the summer cottage, as the last sample taken on 18.8.2025 does not meet the household's water quality recommendations in terms of CODMn value, manganese and iron. In other respects, the sample meets the quality requirements and recommendations for domestic water.

🎣 Lake Vanajavesi, water sports and fishing
Vanajavesi offers a wonderful scenic route and a wide range of services for boaters from Tampere via Hämeenlinna to Janakkala.
In the middle and end of summer, blue-green algae can be found in the lake, in which case swimming and other water sports should be avoided.

Vanajavesi is rich in fish, and you can also fish for crayfish there. The fisheries management fee is a mandatory basic fee for fishermen, which must be paid if you are between 18 and 69 years old and fish with a lure or fishing gear or crayfish. In 2026, the daily fee will be EUR 6 and the weekly fee EUR 16. I will be happy to help you make an online payment.
