Otter Cottage has a beguiling bird's eye view of the River Blackwater. Easily accessible, it is the perfect holiday location for a couple or larger group seeking peace and quiet in the Irish countryside. It sits on a riverside lane that sees almost no traffic. The salmon jump, and it's not unusual to see otters frolicking. The country walks include one of your own - a twenty-minute stroll around the property - with stunning views over the river and the castle and folly on the bank opposite.

The space
Spread over a comfortable two storeys, Otter Cottage is the perfect haven for your holiday adventures in Ireland’s sunny southeast. Three bedrooms sleep up to five, there is a bathroom with bath and shower, and a full kitchen with space for dining. A sunny conservatory offers a private space for rainy days or cooler evenings. A private garden provides access to the riverbank and plenty of space for picnicking.

The beautiful seaside village of Ardmore is 20 minutes’ drive away, as is the historic town of Lismore - with its magnificent castle, cathedral and heritage center. Youghal - again only 20 minutes by car - has one of the longest and most beautiful strands in Europe. Dungarvan, 25 minutes by car, is the starting point of the wonderful Waterford Greenway walking and cycling path.

Fabulous food is also within easy reach. To name just a few of the eateries, there’s The Tannery in Dungarvan, Cliff House Hotel with its Michelin-starred restaurant in Ardmore, and Richmond House in Cappoquin. All offer unique takes on Irish cuisine, but strive to source locally.

For those interested in hiking, the Blackwater Valley offers some of Ireland's most unspoilt walking terrain – from the seashore to the hills of the Knockmealdown and the Comeragh mountains. Or take on our own pilgrims’ path, St. Declan's Way - that links the ancient ecclesiastical centres of Cashel, Co. Tipperary with the Waterford coastal village of Ardmore. The path passes through our nearest village, Aglish, just 4 km. from The Riverbank.

Kayaks and canoes can be rented at Blackwater Kayaks in Villierstown (2km). There’s sailing in Dungarvan, and an adventure centre at Ardmore, within half-an -hour's drive. A little further away, at Tramore, there’s great surfing.

Guest access
For larger groups, it is also possible to rent the Riverbank- a separate one bedroom apartment at the back of Otter Cottage. See the link here: https://www.airbnb.com/h/stayontheriverbank

Other things to note
Please note. The cottage has a burglary alarm system. The system includes two sensors with camera in the main living room.
The system is deactivated (completely off) when in use by guests. It can only be turned on by entering a password from inside the cottage - it cannot be turned on remotely by the host or anyone else. This means that the cameras are off at all times during guests’ stay.

Where you’ll be

Cappoquin, County Waterford, Ireland

Otter Cottage is in a secluded rural area - our closest neighbours are 1/2 km away. Rare enough to pass one another that we all make sure to "salute" (give a small wave) when we do!

Cork is one hour away, as is Waterford City.
