Peace and quiet
Guests say this home is in a quiet area.
Stay on the opalfields, off grid and next door to the iconic Ridge Castle. Deceptively rustic from the outside, the Knights Quarters is an elegant open plan apartment featuring a full sized kitchen, large bathroom and a Queen and King single bed with luxe organic cotton linen.
Enjoy the views and relax by the fire-pit (byo wood) under billions of stars.
This is a genuine camp on the Ridge with solar power so has no heating or air-conditioning, there are fans for summer and blankets for winter.
The space
The Knights Quarters is a quirky structure and was the home of local miners for many years and as with most camps in Lightning Ridge, it features rustic living.
There is a fresh and light amply sized, floor to ceiling tiled internal bathroom with hot and cold water for the shower and a flush loo!
The well equipped kitchen has a stove, microwave, fridge and enough kitchenware to cook up a small banquet.
The Knights Quarters Castle is on solar power and though it is not strong enough to run the split system air-conditioner, there are portable water coolers you can use through the day.
Warm clothes will be needed inside during winter as there's no internal heating but there is an open fire in the grounds for starry fireside evenings. Wood is available to purchase at BP service station in town.
There is a Queen bed and a King single, we supply organic cotton linen and towels.
The open plan lounge area is spacious and comfortable.
A large flat screen TV is available if admiring the stars gets too much!
Staying in the Knights Quarters is a wonderful experience, the perfect place to explore the mining fields of Lightning Ridge. The famous Artesian Bore Baths (free and open 24/7) are a short drive or long stroll away.
Guest access
There is a working mine on site which you cannot go down.
There is a fire pit with a great view to the eastern plains. Wood is available to purchase at BP service station in town.
You are next to the Ridge Castle, and may meet the guests there from time to time! There are no shared spaces.
Other things to note
We have a 2 night minimum stay but highly recommend a 3 night minimum (ideally 5-7 nights) so you have time to relax, enjoy the slower Ridge time and still experience all the delights Lightning Ridge and the surrounding opal fields have to offer! You will have driven a long way to get here so you might as well make the most of it!
This is a rustic mining camp. This is why you are coming to experience life like the locals. It is not the Hilton so Paris would be sad.
Winter nights in the Ridge can get cold. There is no internal heating.
You can have an open campfire (wood is available to purchase locally, ask us for the contact) and we have lots of extra bedding. We suggest warm clothes for inside and outside.
There is an active mine on site, more a dirt than opal mine...but maybe next time!

Neighborhood highlights
The Ridge Castle is located on Simms Hill. The highest point of Lightning Ridge. The views are excellent. The famous artesian bore baths are less than 2km away. They are free, open 24/7 and a must do.
To access the Ridge Castle, it is approximately 2km from town and there is approximately 1km of rocky dirt road. Take care driving in low cars, it is all weather, so driveable when raining.
The Ridge Castle is surrounded by mining claims. Though shafts are always meant to be covered, we do ask you to take particular care if wandering about. Other attractions nearby include Amigo's Castle, The Black Queen and The Observatory. We can point out a few other local attractions as well. There are many.

We are keen independent travellers. 50 plus countries! Trekking. Camel riding. Cycling. Rickshaw driving. Ballooning. More to come.
We run a lot too. Peter has over 50 marathons whilst Wendy completed her first in Medellin, Colombia to celebrate her 60th!
We firmly believe this part of Australia is exceptional with national parks, waterways and beaches to rival any worldwide. We hope you enjoy it here to.
