The space
Picture this: you step onto the porch just after sunrise. The Elk River rushes below cold, clear, catching the early light through old hemlocks. Your coffee is hot. The hot tub is steaming. Inside, a 140-year-old log cabin is waiting with a wood fire, a king bed, and that particular quiet that only comes from a real mountain river. This is not a vacation rental it is an 1884 river cabin. And it still feels exactly like that.

ABOUT THIS SPACE

Every beam in this 1884 hand-hewn log cabin was shaped by hand and those beams are the first thing you notice when you walk through the door. The cabin sits directly on the Elk River in the NC High Country, and private river access is yours from the moment you arrive.

The Living Room anchors around a real wood-burning fireplace the kind you actually use. We stock your first bundle of firewood as a welcome gift. A Smart TV and high-speed Wi-Fi are here when you want them, but the fire tends to win.

The Primary Bedroom has a king bed with soft, quality linens, blackout shades, and the kind of stillness that makes you finally sleep past 7am. The Second Bedroom is a family-friendly setup: one double bed plus two lofted twin singles above, with safety bumpers available for little ones.

Two full bathrooms stocked with Public Goods toiletries mean no morning traffic jams.

The Kitchen is fully equipped for real cooking: full-size refrigerator, gas stove, oven, cookware, utensils, and a dedicated coffee bar. The cabin comfortably sleeps 6 guests across 4 beds.

Outdoors, the private hot tub overlooks the river and seats up to 6. A fire pit is set up for evening gatherings. Private wading and fly fishing access comes with the property.

Practical highlights:

Other things to note
PLEASE NOTE:
To maintain the integrity of an 1884 log structure, we employ a dedicated local team that specializes in historic homes. This fee covers professional linen and towel services, as well as the specialized care required to keep a 140-year-old cabin ready for guests.

Following local tradition, the bedrooms utilize the naturally cool mountain air. With nighttime temperatures in the 50s during June and July, the provided ceiling and portable fans create a perfect sleeping environment with the windows open. Please note that while there is an A/C unit on the main floor, the bedrooms rely on this crisp mountain breeze.

Average nighttime temperatures during the summer are refreshingly cool, typically ranging from the high 40s to mid 50s:

May: 46°F

June: 54°F

July: 57°F

August: 56°F

September: 49°F

We are located in the Great Smoky Mountains. As such we are surrounded by gorgeous vistas and wildlife. On occasion there will be bear sightings at the cabin. Our house manual contains information on bears and what to do should you encounter one.

4WD will be needed during the winter.

Neighborhood highlights

This Old River Cabin is located in one of Banner Elk’s most peaceful and desirable areas, perfectly positioned for easy access to Sugar Mountain, Beech Mountain, and the best of the High Country. The cabin sits just off a well-maintained main road, making travel simple year-round, while the final short road to the property is unplowed in winter—so we recommend 4×4 or AWD vehicles from November through March.

Guests love this neighborhood for its quiet, wooded setting and the soothing sound of the Elk River, which runs just steps from the cabin. It feels private and secluded, yet you’re only minutes from top attractions: 3 minutes to Sugar Mountain skiing, 8 minutes to downtown Banner Elk, and close to hiking trails, wineries, restaurants, tubing, and local markets.

The area is perfect for travelers who want a true mountain retreat with quick access to everything—skiing, snowboarding, hiking, dining, and small-town charm. Roads are easy to navigate, the surroundings are beautiful in every season, and the convenient location makes it an ideal home base for exploring Banner Elk and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
