Luxury off-grid cabin in absolute wilderness nestled on the edge of a small lake fed by a pristine mountain stream a 3-minute drive from Franz Josef Glacier village. The space
Welcome to our luxury off-the-grid eco-cabin, a secluded paradise nestled in the heart of the Southern Alps on the West Coast of New Zealand. Here you'll have the best of both worlds - complete wilderness yet only a 3-minute drive from vibrant Franz Josef Glacier township where a plethora of tourist attractions, hikes, tours, luxury spa, cafes, bars and restaurants await.

Our property spans 30 acres of natural wilderness with the cabin perched on the edge of a small lake fed by a mountain stream. A haven of luxury, comfort and ultimate unwinding. Enjoy panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, Croz glacier, the majestic Fritz waterfall, sensational sunsets and lush rainforest from every aspect of the cabin which features large picture frame windows. Imagine waking up each morning with fresh coffee in hand as you take in the mirror reflections of nature's grandeur and the fresh mountain air that surrounds you.

The lake is swimmable in summer or for a cold plunge after having a sauna year-round. Please note that as the lake is natural and creek-fed - levels naturally rise and fall with rainfall and seasons. As night falls, the gentle sound of the mountain stream that feeds the lake will lull you to sleep. There is a small house at the other end of the lake, positioned approximately 75 meters behind your cabin and landscaped to ensure privacy is maintained.

Inside, the cabin is tastefully decorated with brass fittings, a stone-carved basin, stone benchtops and a fully tiled bathroom. A leather lounge suite perfectly positioned to enjoy the West Coast's sensational sunsets and mirror lake reflections through the huge picture frame window. In the colder months, cosy up beside the roaring fire. A full stock of wood and fire-starting materials will be provided and both fires will be set for you ready to light prior to your arrival.

The cabin features ranch sliders from the living space and the bedroom, which houses a superior super king bed adorned with quality linen. These open onto a large covered deck, where an oversized outdoor stone bath awaits on the lake's edge.

For relaxation, sink into the oversized outdoor bean bags, soak away worries in the outdoor bath and let life stresses melt away in our wood-fired cedar barrel sauna with a panoramic fisheye window. From here, you can soak in the stunning views across the lake, sunsets and mountains.

We rely 100% on solar energy (the sun) for power - you do need to be conscious of power use when it is raining or overcast.

Immerse yourself in nature. Our cabin promises a stay like no other, where every day is a postcard-perfect experience - even on a stormy day it is truly magical. We look forward to welcoming you to your wilderness retreat.

Guest access
You are welcome to swim in the lake (please no diving as it is not very deep). You engage in these activities at your own risk. You have access to the entire cabin, sauna, bath and surrounds. The lake is a shared space with occupants in the house at the other end of the lake who stay at their end of the lake.

FAQ

What do I have to be conscious of when staying in a solar-powered cabin?

THIS IS AN OFF THE GRID SOLAR POWERED CABIN :) Relying on the sun for power is part of the experience of staying in this luxury eco cabin. Whilst staying here, particularly if the weather is bad and there is not much sun - you will need to be conscious of your power use. This is why we ask guests to avoid using the oven and cook using the gas stove instead, you will boil your water with a traditional whistling kettle on the gas stove and we do not provide high-power-use appliances such as hairdryers, curling tongs and straighteners and we ask that these items are not used during your stay so as to avoid running out of power. As the batteries cannot keep up with these high-energy appliances. We do provide a toaster, but if the weather is bad we ask that you toast your toast on the cast iron pan on the gas hob as an alternative method :)

The only source of heating is the wood-fire which we will have prepared for you upon arrival along with plenty of kindling, fire starters and wood to keep warm.

Our barrel sauna is also wood-fired. We provide instructions on how to use and are only a message away.

What happens if the power runs out?

This is a rare occurrence however it may happen if we get an unusually long spell of rainy days compared to what we would typically experience on the West Coast or if power use has not been regulated during your stay (e.g. use of a hair dryer or the oven for example).

What is the access like to your property?

We are about 600 meters down a gravel road off the state highway (note you may need to navigate a few potholes) and this is suitable for 2WD cars.
