The vines:
In Cassis, the vine has been cultivated since antiquity. This culture continued throughout the Middle Ages. King René I, king winemaker himself will advance the cultivation of grapes from his return to Provence in 1492 . It was during his reign that varieties of Muscat grapes were introduced from Italy, especially in Cassis. From year to year, the Cassidians extended the cultivation of vines to other parts of their terroirs and at the end of the 16th century, the communal archives mention vineyards in the northern and eastern districts which are in addition to those already existing in the southeastern part.
The wine of Cassis is one of the first to have received in 1936 the Appellation d 'Origine Contrôlée, at the same time as the Châteauneuf du Pape, the Arbois and the Sauternes. AOC Cassis is produced by 12 estates whose 196 ha of vines are exclusively located in the commune of Cassis. The grapes are harvested by hand.
The vineyard is protected from the mistral by the impressive height of the surrounding hills. In this amphitheatre, Cassis is under the dominance of a microclimate favorable to the cultivation of quality vines. One million bottles of the precious nectar are produced each year and consumed on the best tables of Blackcurrant...and the world.
