Neighborhood highlights

THE HISTORY OF THE CENTOCELLE DISTRICT OF ROME:

The name of the CENTOCELLE Quarter comes from Centum Cellae, a military town built by Emperor Constantine I where a hundred of the Imperial Guard's best knights, the Equites Singulares Augusti and their horses were located.
Centocelle became famous thanks to its airport of the same name during 1909, one of the Wright brothers, Wilbur, went to give a series of demonstrations of their Flyer: the first, heaviest motorized aircraft than the air I've ever flown. At the time it was just an airfield, later it became an important landing space for air travel until ’43,
but slowly the urbanization of the entire area made the airport unusable to give space to houses and a more livable complex. The cottages and tramways gave the working class, as artisans, small traders and peasants, the chance to live here fully and start over after the Second World War.
The streets of Centocelle tell thousands of stories and walking them is a unique experience. You won't find statues or alleys like in the center, but you will have the chance to live and experience the authentic Roman way of life first hand.
Iresti of the Alessandrino aqueduct that sprout majestically around the corner, a colorful and lively environment make this neighborhood a must when you are in Rome.

WHAT TO SEE IN CENTOCELLE:

Alessandrino ▪️Aqueduct in Viale Palmiro Togliatti, 630

– The Alessandrino Aqueduct, built by Alessandro Severo in 226 AD, is definitely a hallmark of this district. The water flowed for about 22 kilometers and had its source in the Monte Compatri area (just at the end of the new Metro C).

▪️Forte Prenestino in Via Federico Delpino, 187

Fort Prenestino is one of the 15 forts of Rome (built in 1880). It became a social center in the 1980s (becoming the largest in Europe), giving space, over the years, to events of all kinds. Its urban atmosphere and graffiti mixed with the architecture of the 1800s make it a really interesting place to visit.

Archaeological ▪️Park of Villa Giordani in Via Prenestina, 325

– The Archaeological Park of Villa Gordiani, on the edge of the district, gives space to the Gordian Mausoleum, Tor dè Schiavi, the Octagonal Hall and the remains of the Christian Basilica. The park is divided into North and South, crossed by the Via Prenestina. Perfect for a bike ride or a walk in the sun.

Mother Teresa▪️ Park in Calcutta.
▪️The Monument in memory of Rolando Lanari, victim of the Red Brigades, on the Gardenie square.
▪️The gravestone for the victims of Nazi-fascism, in the square of the Camellias.
▪️Church of the Holy Family of Nazareth.
▪️Church of San Bernardo di Chiaravalle.
▪️Church of San Felice da Cantalice, in Piazza San Felice da Cantalice.
▪️Church of Sant'Ireneo, in Via dei Castani.
▪️Church of Gesù Adolescente, Borgo Ragazzi Don Bosco, Via Prenestina.
