Fish on-site! Bass, crappie, and bluegill are plentiful in our two lakes (no license required); steelhead and trout in the river (license required). Fish from shore or reserve our rowboat or kayaks for $35/day. Please request in advance.

Guest access
Stroll our private trails through woods and around lakes. Meditate on one of several benches overlooking the lakes. Sit still a while and you'll see fish jumping, turtles sunning on logs, maybe even a bald eagle or two. Savor your morning coffee on your private deck while watching the herons, and listening to frogs and birdsong. At the end of a day of fishing, hiking, or lounging on the beach, cozy up around a campfire to watch the fireflies come out. No license is needed to fish in our private lakes, which have lots of bluegill and bass. Rowboat and two kayaks are available, $35/day.
Our property is a Land Conservancy Site, and is home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including deer, beavers, woodchucks, minks, a gazillion squirrels, and many species of birds, including blue herons, sandhill cranes, bald eagles, owls, and hawks.
Heron's Rest plus its deck and firepit are reserved for your exclusive use. We'll give you a wide berth and respect your privacy. If you stroll our trails, however, we may cross paths.
Other things to note
We designed Herons Rest for a maximum of 4 people. While we prefer that our guests be low-key, the normal sounds of living are not a problem. Our home and Heron's Rest are separated by a breezeway, so you'll have plenty of peace and quiet. Our woodworking shop is located across the parking lot, so during weekday business hours you may see/hear woodworking, an occasional truck, etc.
Our House Manual details some of our favorite restaurants, things to do, and general resources. We also provide a guide to the area's best hiking trails and breweries.
No pets, sorry.

Heron's Rest is a five-minute drive from Greenbush Brewery and Infusco Coffee. Another five minutes will get you to Warren Dunes, Michigan's most popular state park, with three miles of white sand beaches and hiking trails in forested dunes. Our region is rich in hiking trails, breweries and wineries. To help you choose your activities, we provide "Trails & Ales", winery brochures, and a Harbor Country Guide. Our House Manual details our favorite restaurants and activities.
Several years ago, we signed a conservation easement on our land, ensuring it will remain in a natural state for perpetuity. We are now working to restore the lawns to mini prairies by removing invasive vines and allowing native flowers and grasses to return. We mow paths to the pond, and a strip of lawn close to the house. Otherwise, we let nature have her way. Herons, beavers and deer are frequent visitors — sometimes even bald eagles. Bird watchers, bring your binoculars! In the early morning and evening, watch for deer passing through.
