Beautiful area

Guests love this home’s scenic location.
Nestled along the banks of the Rock River under tall oaks, ye ol cabin was built by early settlers in 1907. Legit rustic charm. Secluded yet only 10 mins from the fun town of Oregon.
100 acres of private property, bordering Lowden-Miller State Forest. Includes use of canoes/kayaks, large riverfront yard, grills, hammocks, deck, porch and firewood. $33/night per person or pet after first 2 people. Message Tim about accomodating larger groups and events. Closed for winter November through March.

The space
The Sauk and Fox tribes lived here until the 1830's, enjoying its protected woodlands and excellent fishing. The land was deeded to an early settler in 1855, and the cabin was built in 1907. Although updated with electricity, hot water, bathroom/shower and a kitchen, it remains rustic with no TV or Wi-Fi. Well suited for reunions, hiking, biking, boating, art/writing retreat, barbecuing, yard games, hammock-time, campfires and porch sitting. There's one bedroom, a loft, living room with fire place, large dining table, kitchen (stove/oven, fridge, spices, coffee/espresso makers, InstantPot etc), bathroom/shower, porch and large deck. For sleeping, there's a total of three queen beds in the bedroom, loft and by fireplace. Additionally there's a long leather couch in the living room, a day bed by windows and cots. In the yard overlooking the river, there are several hammocks set up between the large oak trees. AC in bedroom. Fans in living room. Heating limited to space heaters and wood burner. Please limit hiking to the cabin area and bordering State Forest. The northern portion of property is leased to friends who bow-hunt it so please stay south (cabin to Hay Road).

Guest access
Upon reservation you'll get directions, entry codes and have exclusive access to the cabin, riverfront and surrounding woodlands. River access for canoe/kayak trips (canoes & kayaks provided by signing liability waiver) and 20+ miles of trails in the surrounding Lowden-Miller State Forest & nearby Castle Rock State Park.

Other things to note
Well behaved pets (with responsible owners) are welcome by adding to the reservation. Please pick up after your pet (pooper-scooper by woodshed) and keep them off of the furniture.

Cell service is good for Verizon, US Cellular and AT&T. There is no Wi-Fi unless you use your phone as a hot spot.

Be aware that the river below can be swift, especially with high water.
Please bring your own "beach" towel. Other linens are provided.

Neighborhood highlights

This is one of the most tranquil and remote locations you can imagine, bordering Lowden-Miller State Forest and a beautiful stretch of the Rock River. It's at the end of a windy road through the woods yet has electricity and pristine drinking water from an artesian well. Light traffic (Rt 2) can be heard across the river but it's muttled by the constant symphony of songbirds. A tallgrass prairie and wild bison preserve (Nachusa Grasslands) is 4 miles away and Oregon, Dixon and Franklin Grove are neat little historic towns with shopping, dining and a bit of nightlife. La Vigna is a sensational little Italian restaurant just down the road towards Oregon. Check out https://www.visitnorthwestillinois.com/ for a local events calendar.

I'm a bee keeper and curriculum developer for environmental programs. I grew up overseas traveling with archeologist parents and know the importance of treating travelers well. I live a few miles from the cabin on a small organic farm and love the Rock River Valley - be it canoeing with the eagles or simply enjoying a sunset. This old cabin has been in the family for generations, having been built in 1907. If the logs could talk...
