At the edge of a wildflower meadow with mountain views, this beautifully furnished glamping tent has two queen beds, front porch and private rear deck. Each of our four tents has a kitchenette in the Lodge. Sweet new Bath House. Enjoy wood-fired pizza (most but not all nights) and our new all natural wood hot tub (booked for private experience for $25) . 40 acres of meadows, woods, pond, streams and trails. Nightly bonfires and star gazing, a nearby lake and rafting in the Hudson River.

The space
We have four glamping tents, Glamp Richard, Glamp Suzanne, Glamp Bernice and Glamp Thomas which are spaciously set apart for privacy yet an easy walk to the Bath House and the Lodge where each glamping tent has its own kitchenette.

The tents have a “fly” over them so they stay remarkably cool during the day and completely waterproof. At night, zip up the canvas windows and doors, and stay cozy under handmade feather quilts. In the tent, there is an electric fireplace to take the chill off. The Lodge and Bath House are heated in the spring and fall.

The Bath House has a women’s side with two toilets, a shower and double vanity with glass vessel sinks; ditto for the men’s side. In the nearby Lodge, there is also a lovely new bathroom with an old-fashion claw foot tub where you can enjoy a deep bath with lavender salts. We provide nice towels and soap.

In the Lodge, there are individual kitchenettes for each of our four glamping tents. Each kitchenette has a sink, one burner cooktop, coffee maker, compact refrigerator, dishes, cutting board, glasses, utensils, napkins and basics of salt, pepper, sugar. Bring your own coffee and cream. There are open shelves for you to store your groceries.

Outside are several charcoal grills and a gas grill. We provide charcoal and lighter fluid.

We spent the fall and winter of 2019 building an amazing all natural cedar hot tub. Located on one of the most beautiful spots of our land, our Japanese wood hot tub is a delightful treat for our guests. Built within a small post and beam temple-like structure with gorgeous views of the mountains beyond and wildflowers below, our spa tub is a wonderful way to relax during your stay. $25 for an hour’s retreat of happiness.

Most nights in the summer, we offer wood fired pizza. Here’s how it works. We make and provide the dough, and guests bring their own toppings. We fire up the wood-fired pizza in the late afternoon. By 6:30, the wood fire has died down and the oven is about 800 degrees. From six-thirty to seven, guests come to the pizza pavilion with their toppings (we also have toppings) and we help them cook their pizzas. Because the oven is so hot, the pizzas cook in about three minutes.

We also have an on site “cottage kitchen” bakery offering muffins, cupcakes, Bundt cakes and waffles with fresh fruit.

At dusk, we get the bonfire going so guests can relax to watch the fire and the stars. There is no “light pollution” so it is an amazing experience to see thousands of stars, night clouds, moonscapes.

Our flock of chickens are fun to watch as they free range all over the property. They aren't laying eggs yet, however, because they are too young.

We have two lab dogs who love to visit our guests, Bella and Sammy. Our cabins are set up for visiting dogs, but unfortunately we cannot host dogs in the tents.

The lake is three miles down the winding road …13th Lake it is called and it is just beautiful. Totally natural and quiet with no sign of civilization on its shores. The Hudson River is at the bottom of our mountain; clear beautiful water; you go tubing or rafting with the various rafting companies located right nearby.

The town of North Creek is five miles away off the main Route 28 road but it’s easy to miss so look for the 3 or 4 signs that mark the entrance to “town”. North Creek is a scenic little town with some great restaurants, a grocery store, liquor store, some shopping places and a rail biking called Revolution Rail.

Another great experience is nearby Garnet Hill Lodge, an historic lodge offering lunches and dinners … beautiful property, amazing views, great food. It’s located right up the road in North River. They rent mountain bikes and have all kinds of walking trails.

Lots and lots more to do … check our online Guide Book for more suggestions!

Our property is all walkable --- you can walk to the hot tub, the wood fired pizza, the bakery and the gardens. We also have golf carts for rent which are fun and convenient. Five miles away in the little town of North Creek, we have two cottages directly on the Hudson River. With 14 acres surrounding the cottages, it feels like you are way out in the country but it's a short walk to the town of North Creek. The listings are called is called Riverfront Cottage on the Hudson River and Camp Riverwood on the Hudson.

For larger groups, we have a fabulous Victorian in North Creek which sleeps 10. Family friendly with huge country kitchen, gorgeous woodwork, five bedrooms and in the restored barn, a game room with an actual stage and a cedar hot tub. Adirondack Victorian is the name of the listing.

Other things to note
WHAT IS GLAMPING?
“Glamping" --- a combination of glamorous and camping --- has recently become popular with vacation travelers and outdoor enthusiasts who want to be outside in a beautiful natural environment without the hassle of pitching a tent or sleeping on the ground. The idea of roughing it during a camping trip might sound appealing to many vacationers if it weren't for having to consider, gather, purchase, pack and then carry in everything you need to go camping. That is where “glamping" comes in --- it's an already set-up tent with a beautiful bed, a nearby hot shower and fairy lights. The trend is growing in popularity --- starting in Europe --- now here in the United State: glamorous camping, otherwise known as glamping.

When “glamping", there's no tent to pitch and no sleeping bag to unroll. Instead, visitors arrive to find a beautiful canvas tent set up on a wooden platform, a bed made up with nice linens, a nice bathroom nearby and a blazing fire with Adirondack lawn chairs around it. Add gorgeous views of Gore Mountain, a scenic Hobby Farm with its scenic gardens and a few gentle farm animals set amoungst acres of Adirondack wildflowers, and it's a slice of heaven.

HISTORY OF CAMPING

'Camping out' is becoming merely a name for moving out of one's permanent habitation and dwelling for a few weeks in a well-built lodge, smaller than one's home, but as comfortable and almost as convenient; with tables, chairs and crockery, carpets and curtains, beds with sheets and blankets on real bedsteads, a stove and its full outfit of cooking utensils, wherefrom meals are served in the regular ways of civilization… This misnamed camping out has become a fashion which seems likely to last till the shores are as thronged as the towns, and the woods are spoiled for real campers…."
~ Rowland Evans Robinson, In New England
Fields and Woods, 1896

"From my experience and observation, I am thoroughly convinced that camp-life in dry places, and at a reasonable altitude above the water, especially in a pine grove, has a wonderful effect in benefitting and restoring weak lungs."
~ The Adirondacks as a Health Resort, 1886

NORTH RIVER MOUNTAINTOP HOBBY FARM Our family-owned mountaintop property in North River originated in 1910 when my great-aunt came as a teenager from Port Washington, Long Island to the Adirondacks to recover from tuberculosis. Back then, the only known cure for TB was to be outside, in cold winter months on a porch under quilts or walking the meadows in the summer. Fortunately Aunt Edie recovered from TB, and in celebration, my great-grandparents built Bird Camp which is now restored and one of our vacation rental cabins. There are still apple trees in the meadows which were planted one hundred years and ten years ago by my great-grandfather. I treasure the old black and white photos I have of this era. Sadly, the property went into decline over the decades when the various siblings, cousins and in-laws could not agree on how to maintain the property. It took decades, but I managed to buy out the other owners. Once free with clear title, I began the hands on restoration of the original Bird Camp. Then, thinking that I might scratch out a living as a hobby farm, I built a unique “farmstand” and large gardens, but then pivoted as is sometimes necessary in business (and life) --- I converted the farmstand into a vacation rental (“The Farmstand”) and kept the large gardens where we grow cut flowers, herbs and vegetables for our guests and for sale at farmer’s market. About 10 years ago, I bought 40 additional acres of beautiful adjoining land below ours (Shields Road) where there were once incredible views of the Hudson River and the mountains beyond. I worked with an excavator to clear the woods for six new sites, creating for each incredible views for which the land was once known. After some intense approval hassles, I began to design and build small romantic cabins and various outbuildings in what architects call the “new old” style. The construction and design are driven by a desire to pay homage to the original Japanese/Adirondack architectural detailing of the 19th century. As a carpenter and home designer, I have taken great pleasure in this work --- frequently picking up my tools to work alongside the various craftsmen who have helped to these unique cabins and out buildings. One year’s work was building a Japanese temple with a natural cedar hot tub overlooking Gore Mountain. Another project was a wood fired pizza oven and pavilion. Both amenities are treasured by our visiting guests. Our land in North River is now developed as far as we wish to go. Hence, we named the last cabin “Camp Finale” to signify the end of what we will build here. Our focus is now on maintaining a restorative and relaxing experience for our guests. Our vacation cabins in North River on the Hobby Farm are named: Bird Camp Farmstand Camp HudsonView Camp Lillian Camp Bossie Camp Finale Glamp Richard Glamp Suzanne Glamp Thomas Glamp Bernice NEW PROJECT --- NORTH CREEK HUDSON RIVER PROPERTY Five miles down river from our mountainside paradise, we now have another beautiful property directly on the Hudson River in nearby North Creek. The 14 acre parcel which I purchased in the summer of 2021 included an abandoned 1940’s cottage which not been inhabited for decades. The boarded-up cottage, overlooking the Hudson River which is directly across the country road, was ready to collapse. The rafters and outside walls were bowing, huge pine trees ready to fall on top of it and the interior was in deplorable condition. For an entire pleasurable year, I worked alongside my group of tradespeople to restore the cottage. Tricky carpentry was involved to shore up and brace the sagging roof rafters, and to bring the outside walls back to plumb. Because of the cottage’s proximity to the Hudson River, the new septic system had to be designed carefully to meet setbacks, and the abutting flood plain elevation had to be dealt with in the permitting process. The interior was gutted and rebuilt in our “new old” style with knotty pine beadboard, antique beams, bright tile work and an antique style bathroom. Sensing that this could be the place where I may live in retirement (close to town, flatter grades and less challenging in the winter than living atop a mountain), I admittedly went a little overboard during the renovation with extra beautiful detailing inside and out. (I read this somewhere recently and it describes my building philosophy: “A preferable solution is to maintain all that is good. All that has served us well. Maintain the foundations of the old house and as much of the structure above as is still sound. Root out the rot and treat the wood worms. Repair and replace what is broken but keep as much as possible of what has stood the test of time, what has worked.” This is good advice for old homes and life as well.) Although virtually everything in the cottage has been replaced (framing, siding, roofing, interior finish, mechanicals), the Hudson River cottage now appears both inside and out as a well-maintained historic cottage instead of a major renovation. This pleases me. Our Hudson River cottage is named Riverfront Cottage on the Hudson River. THE PLEASURE I TAKE IN HOSTING IS NOW TWOFOLD … ON THE MOUNTAINSIDE AND BY THE HUDSON RIVER … HOW LUCKY AM I? I have the honor to host vacationing guests who come to the Adirondack Mountains from all over the world, and who leave with generous notes of thanks and lovely reviews. On our mountainside property In North River, our guests enjoy having the opportunity to live as I do with my children now, and as my grandparents and great-grandparents once did here. We treasure our farm-like setting reminiscent of an 1800’s farm with pleasant meadows, beautiful mountain views and brilliant star-filled nights. On our riverside property in nearby North Creek, our guests enjoy the beauty of staying right on the Hudson River on a quiet country road where they can slip into the river to bathe or fish or kayak, where they can enjoy a quick walk to the sweet downtown. To create these amazingly beautiful places, I have invested years of my own labor, energy and design expertise, and I have willingly taken on substantial financial risk and debt. But I would not own these wonderful places if not for my brother Thomas Clement and my late father Richard Clement who made significant financial contributions and gave me great encouragement. I am most grateful for their love and help, and I consider myself a lucky woman indeed.
