Our comfortable cottage is set in a beautiful walled garden with private lockable access & adjacent street parking.
Easy walking to local farmers' markets, restaurants, and delightful walks in the mountains. 10 min drive from a beautiful mountain lake for swimming and relaxing.
Close to the railway station & 4 airports - Toulouse, Castres, Beziers & Carcassonne.
Good access either by car or public transport to other cultural towns in Occitane for museums, galleries, tourist sites and shopping.

The space
The gîte is a two bed-roomed 19th century cottage that sleeps 4 people, has air-conditioning and has the 3 Star Award from the local Tourist Office.
The bedrooms are next to each other, so you walk through the twin bedroom to get to the double bedroom, or use the French doors onto the garden (perfect for summer nights). The gîte has one large shower room, a large comfortable living room and a separate, well equipped kitchen.
All rooms are south-east facing and have shuttered, double French doors leading onto a well maintained garden with lockable street access.
The organic garden is very sunny, with shady areas for the high summer and is planted with fragrant plants and herbs. Various birds nest here each year and we have the delightful company of small, harmless lizards.
Gîte Wistéria’s position in town is very unique – a 5 minute walk to Mazamet’s amenities and yet 5 minutes walk away from wonderful walks in the Montagne Noire National Park and the Passerelle (a pedestrian sky-bridge across to the ancient hill village of Hautpoul - an absolute 'must visit' if you're in the area). We are probably the nearest self-contained rental cottage to the Passerelle in Mazamet.

Guest access
Our guests have private access to the whole gite garden. It is not shared with anyone. They also have a lockable gate entrance from the street into the private gite garden. Although the gite is built on one level, there are 9 steps up to the street level from the garden with a hand-rail.
Parking for cars, motorbikes or trail bike trailers is on the street or in nearby public car parks. You can bring your bicycles into the garden, but don't forget we have 9 steps from the garden to the street!

Other things to note
We are close to some of the southern routes of the Tour de France, so check out the dates if you're a cycling enthusiast!
Gîte Wistéria is very close to many cultural and historic centres which are featured on our website. If you are interested in medieval history, then this is your country – we are surrounded by castles, fine cathedrals and medieval towns and villages. The major cultural centres of Toulouse, Carcassonne, Albi, Castres and Beziers are all within about an hour’s drive from the gite making exploring the area very easy. Come and discover this relatively unknown corner of France!

Neighborhood highlights

We love it here in Mazamet as it's a busy working town with a great atmosphere. There are lots of events happening here all the year round that you can find out about through the local tourist office. There are good restaurants and cafes and a brilliant twice weekly street market for all you gourmet needs. The wineries are worth visiting too as so much amazing wine is produced here that is not exported! Mazamet has great golf, fishing, skiing, cycling and swimming - so I think there really is something for everyone here!
Mazamet was a very prosperous town in the early 20th century, making its money from the leather and wool industry. As a result there are many fine properties, large warehouses and old factories that make amazing living spaces. The gîte makes an excellent base from which to view property, if you are considering a base in France, whether for studios or living accommodation. Although there are many estate agents here, a lot of vendors prefer to negotiate privately, which means if you are serious, you need to actually be here and walk the streets. It has paid off for a lot of people already and with the varied climate and close proximity to airports and other major cities, Mazamet is indeed a perfect location.

My work: Artists and silversmith, running the gite
Speaks English
I live with my partner Martin Capey here in Mazamet where we both have art studios. Apart from our own practice, we love living here for the amazing walks in the mountains, swimming in the various lakes and, due to the clement weather - a bit of gardening! This region, as indeed all of France, is amazing for it's local food produce that we certainly like a lot! We enjoy being hosts as we can then share some of this amazing place with our guests. We live adjacent to the gite, and although we are keen to see our guests settled in OK, our style is fairly low key during their stay! We just want people to have a great time!
