Hi-clearance 4WD is a REQUIREMENT
The space
IT’S HERE!
The new EAGLE NEST yurt has completed it's third full season of rentals and we have an amazing 100% 5-star guest reviews so far! Read the reviews to see what past guests have to say about this fantastic yurt.
Very Important - NO AWD VEHICLES, access is not guaranteed unless you have a true 4WD with high-clearance, low range gearing option, full size spare, tires with good tread. Think truck (Toyota Tundra, Tacoma, Ford f-250) or full size SUV like a 4Runner etc. If your vehicle has a temporary donut tire for a spare it is the definition of what not to bring. Thanks.
NEW METAL SIDING - if you are wondering why the yurt walls are green now it's because we covered the exterior with low-reflection, green roof metal. Last spring a bear did some pretty heavy damage to the fabric exterior, so we installed the metal which has also worked well to repel bears at my other yurt. We are keeping the old yurt photos on Airbnb since there are many great pics and the only change is the yurt exterior.
FOR LARGER GROUPS - Now you can rent both yurts for up to 10 people. There is a trail through the wooded portion between the yurts and then a flat meadow so it's an easy 1/4 to 1/3 mile walk with basically no elevation difference between them. Both yurts are totally private from each other yet close enough that a large group can book both properties together. This yurt is accessed on a different road so you should never see the guests from the other yurt... unless you want to.
As mentioned above we have had lots of monsoon summer rains and the last mile and a half is an unmaintained forest service road that is very rough and REQUIRES a serious 4WD vehicle with low range gearing option, high clearance and full size spare (like a truck or serious SUV or off road UTV or side by side). Hint- if your vehicle has a small donut spare tire it is NOT what you need to access the property. Read our reviews to see what people say about the road but ignore reviews that say they used AWD, as multiple guests have tried and failed in the past so AWD's are no longer allowed. Please understand that you can't have a real backcountry experience like this if any city vehicle can make it to the property! Buy, borrow, rent but get a 4WD.
NOTE: The location shown on Airbnb is incorrect. I am working with the county to establish addresses for the yurts so that Airbnb will change the location of the new yurt on their map and it will be updates ASAP. Just an FYI
We are keeping the new Eagle Nest yurt the same base price as my other yurt for now to get things rolling. But it will increase at some point because of all of the extra amenities and the larger size that can sleep up to 6 guests (4 on beds, 2 on cots).
To get a small taste of what to expect please go to my other listing “Stunning Yurt Location near Creede” on Airbnb where you can read some of the 230+ 5-star reviews.
Why is it named Eagle Nest yurt? Because it’s notched into the massive San Juan Mts at 10,600' elevation and perched on an 1,100' drop off. Plus, we had a bald eagle fly over on the day the yurt was erected!

Access to amazing hiking, biking, fishing and every other outdoor activity Mineral County has to offer — including the Phoenix Falls hike a favorite among guests of the other yurt.
Incredible star viewing! Check out pics of my other yurt and night photos contributed by previous guests. One of the darkest skies anywhere with no ambient light
Hiking details and satellite screenshot of the area will be emailed to you along with detailed instructions on how to find and use the yurt.
Because of the expense and fragile nature of much of the equipment we do require that you have some previous reviews on Airbnb to use the instant-book feature. Contact Mark directly to book if you don’t have previous reviews.
The damage deposit is also high but just be very careful and read all instructions and you won’t be charged for normal wear and tear.
Dogs ARE allowed! We are one of the few Airbnb establishments that do allow well-behaved dogs. The drop off in front of the porch is very steep (not a cliff until farther down) so you will need to be sure your dog stays nearby.
Our new Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) for grey water was engineered and built under Colorado Health Department’s strict Regulation 43 and approved by the state and county. The company that installed it was amazing!
Here is our story:
Phoenix Ridge Yurts is a wilderness lodging establishment located in one of the most spectacular settings imaginable in the beautiful San Juan Mountains near Creede Colorado!
Since discovering Airbnb we now are connecting with cool people from all over the planet that want to come and experience one of Colorado's most unique mountain getaways. We have over 200 reviews now with close to 100% 5-star ratings and we want to make sure that your personal experience staying with us is just plain awesome!
Our original yurt was featured two years in a row in Denver's popular 5280 Magazine
This is a true wilderness experience in the rugged San Juan Mountains, so you need to be as prepared as if you were camping. The yurt is an awesome shelter which isn't like camping at all, but there is no power (except a small solar system in the detached bathroom), no running water, no Internet or cell phone service at all on the property. You are only 5 miles from town, but you are truly in the wilderness at the yurt.
Some things to note before booking:
A true high-clearance 4WD vehicle is required for the last couple of miles or so to access the property. That means true 4WD SUVs, jeeps, or 4WD trucks. The road isn't all that steep, but it is rough and can get rougher quickly depending on weather, etc. You can bring any vehicle you like and many have and made it just fine. But there are no refunds if you don't have a true 4WD and can’t access the property. Please read our reviews about what others say about the road.
UPDATE: The road is in better shape than it was in May after the runoff because of traffic smoothing it out. Several AWD vehicles (Subaru, Kia , etc.) that are not high clearance have made it with no problem.
All adult guests must sign a liability release form before staying. This is a true backcountry experience and it is essential that you are prepared for any situation, especially during the winter months in the rugged San Juan Mountains. No cell phone or internet for emergencies, wild animals are nearby, wild weather, and all the challenges you would face if you were backpacking — except you can drive back to town in about 15 minutes.
You need to bring your own sleeping bags, we provide a queen bed, sterilized waterproof mattress cover and pillow protectors (no other bedding). We suggest bringing a sleeping bag even In the warmer summer months since it’s easier but some guests bring their own bedding (sheets, comforter, etc.) which is fine if you don't want a sleeping bag.
You must bring your own towels, pillow cases and ALL WATER YOU WILL NEED (summer/fall). For stays of 3 night or longer we do provide 7 gallons per 2 people per night.
You MUST arrive during daylight hours. The yurt is not visible at all from the road, so it’s extremely difficult to find at night. Plan ahead please and stay at nearby lodging the night before if you must to be sure to arrive during the day. We do provide detailed directions on how to find the yurt and some satellite screenshots and GPS coordinates to help.
You must clean the yurt yourself before leaving, there is no cleaning service available but we also don't charge anything. We have had fantastic luck with the Airbnb crowd paying it forward for other guests by cleaning up and even leaving extra water, spices and other thoughtful items.
NO OUTDOOR FIRES ARE EVER ALLOWED AT THE YURT. There are thousands of beetle-killed trees just waiting to burn. You will be required to state that you won't have any outdoor fires. (fire pit on deck can be used anytime).
In addition to items mentioned above we also provide:
Detailed directions on how to get to the yurt and instructions on how to use everything there with access combinations, etc. will be provided approximately 1 week before your stay
Satellite screenshot of the yurt and local landmarks
GPS coordinates that you can plug into online satellite programs to check out the vicinity near the yurt
Hiking documents with some hikes right from the yurt along with links to topo maps and other resources
Great deck for riding the planet. The weather, the mood and the seasons seem to change here hourly. Grab a bottle of wine and wonder why you just can’t seem to muster the energy for anything else.
Note on water - We tried for the last 3 years to provide some wash water for guests but we now require you to bring ALL WATER with you (since you can drive right to the yurt) for stays of 2 days or less. You can buy inexpensive and handy 2.5-gallon water dispensers at any grocery store.
The info below is more FYI with extra details in case you are interested:
We strive to have a high level of communication with you before your stay to make sure that you are well informed and totally prepared for your backcountry stay with us. But this is a yurt and there is no running water, electricity or Internet so please don't expect a hotel-like setting. But if you love the great outdoors and nature, then you owe it to your self to come and visit.
What you get when you stay here is the feeling of being deep in the wilderness, yet having easy access and creature comforts surrounding you. But this is a backcountry yurt experience not a residence in the city. Here is what you will experience when you stay with us:
27 acres of private land surrounded by a sea of National Forest. Not another private property or structure in sight. No regulations or restrictions from land-use permits for dwellings on Forest Service land. We own it!
1,100’ vertical foot drop-off out the front door into beautiful East Willow Canyon and Phoenix Park, with its perennial waterfalls and cliffs
Front porch view of the massive La Garita Mountains (13,000’ +) and the least-used wilderness area in Colorado, the La Garita Wilderness, just 5 miles away
Hiking, biking, skiing and fishing in the San Juan Mountains, one of the most spectacular, undiscovered, remote areas in Colorado
Yet you are just a 15-minute drive (summer/fall) to the historic and eclectic town of Creede with it's funky cool restaurants, unique shops and the amazing Creede Repertory Theatre rated by USA Today as “One of the 10 best places to see the lights off Broadway”.
There is NO PHONE OR INTERNET at the yurt, you are on your own (yay, no technology)
Come and check it out for yourself and be our next 5-star guest!
Guest access
100% of the property is available to guests. Owner will never stop by (unless in an emergency) so you can expect maximum privacy during your stay
Other things to note
Once again a reminder that you need a true 4WD vehicle with low range option and high clearance and good tires (like a truck or serious SUV or off road UTV or side by side). I have a Toyota Tundra and have no problem getting up there. Typical all-wheel-drive vehicles without low range are NOT sufficient to get to the yurt. Read our reviews to see what people say about the road and please understand that you can't have a real backcountry experience like this if any city vehicle can make it to the property! Buy, borrow, rent but get a real 4WD for your trip.
Located in the San Juan Mtns at 10,600', the Eagle Nest yurt awaits your arrival! Come and enjoy stargazing, hiking to the Phoenix Park waterfall or just sitting on the deck and taking in the view.

After struggling to advertise this amazing property on my own for many years I discovered Airbnb and have never looked back. Let me just say this; the people that have stayed with me for the last 3-4 years booking through Airbnb are the coolest, kindest most interesting people EVER! I am consistently blown away by the “pay it forward” attitude of the Airbnb guests I host. They leave cool things (like games, books, maps, coffee) for other guests and they write the most amazing adventure stories about their experiences while staying with me in the yurt journal and in online reviews. So a huge thank you to all my amazing guests and to Airbnb for providing the way for all of us to connect!
