The space
We strive to live a sustainable life while still enjoying life's little luxuries. Our main house and multiple features around the property were built with strawbales, and other waste materials. The guest house was built with mostly salvaged and recycled materials. The guest house is a 900+ square foot studio with a queen bed and 3/4 bath with a huge shower. The living space has a large entertainment center with a 55" TV. The sound system will make you feel like you are right in the middle of the action. Relax in the overstuffed chair while you read a book or listen to the vintage sound system. If you are a music lover or audiophile, you'll feel right at home here. Musician-friendly, instruments are available - be inspired for your next album or even record in the beauty and quiet of the desert! The kitchenette is fully stocked and has everything you need to prepare simple meals plus there is an outdoor grill. The property is five acres with hiking and horseback riding trails leading off the property. If birds are your thing, we are the place for you! We've got great birding locations minutes away as well as tons of birds here on the property. Stargazers are not to be left out, we have super dark skies, perfect for stargazing with great views of the night sky with the naked eye. Bring your telescope or use ours for an even more breathtaking view. You can welcome the day watching the sun come up over the hills behind the house while practicing your favorite yoga pose and end the day enjoying the sunset over the San Jacinto mountains sitting at the firepit with your favorite drink.
*COVID-19
In order to keep us all as safe as possible, we are changing some of the ways we do things and are asking some things from you as well.
*Mark and I are fully vaccinated and boostered and are requesting our guests be vaccinated as well*
We will not be accepting guests 24 hours before or after your stay
Outside guests must be approved prior and also should be vaccinated/boosted
We do not do a personalized walkthrough any longer but do try to greet our guests upon arrival and introduce ourselves and answer any questions you might have. This is done outside on the driveway.
As well as our regular cleaning we are using bleach or alcohol to disinfect all high touch areas
Masks might still required in some places locally. Please be prepared. Onsite we are following California mask mandates and no longer requiring them at check in as we are outside. Otherwise, it is very easy to physically distance with each other.
We might be asking some additional COVID specific screening questions as well as the regular questions we ask to ensure a great experience prior to accepting your reservation. Please understand that we are relying on the honor system when answering these questions. We thank you for your understanding and truthfulness. Together we will not only hopefully make your stay an excellent one but keep everyone safe as we navigate these unusual times.

Guest access
Both the main and guest house share the backyard and pool

Other things to note
*Please note we are NOT in Joshua Tree. We are about 40 minutes from the main park entrance. We are closer to Palm Springs - about 20 minutes to downtown Palm Springs.
*If you are a smoker, this is probably not the space for you. I am sensitive to certain smells like cigarettes and marijuana which give me migraines. Since I am responsible for the cleaning, if you have smoked inside or even if it just lingers from your clothes this would cause problems for me. Thank you for your understanding.
*We ask screening questions to ensure the best possible experience. Things like what brings you to the desert, tell us about yourself and your guest, what your plans are, and what made you choose DesertStrawHouse. If you are not comfortable answering these questions, then this is not the stay for you.
*11/28/2018 We regret we are no longer able to offer usage of the indoor fireplace due to misuse by guests. The firepit is still available but please be safe and conscientious.

Neighborhood highlights

Sky Valley is a unincorporated rural area just north of Palm Springs. It is an old area started from the homesteaders building the underground canal from the Colorado River to Riverside. You have a mix of properties from "old desert rats", "snowbirds", horse ranches, nurseries and everything in between.

My work: DesertStrawHouse Native Plant Nursery - specializing in wildlife habitats
I live just outside of Palm Springs, CA with Mark, my husband of over 30 years. Our two kids are grown - our son lives in Hawaii and our daughter in Texas. My passion is teaching people about our desert and how to live in balance with nature. You are equally likely to find me on a hiking trail as a concert.
