The space
Thanks for your interest in staying at the Daboll Homestead. AirBnB continues to mis-categorize our property and there is no way for us to correct this ourselves - we have submitted numerous requests. This is a true historical home - older than the Declaration of Independence.
First and foremost, we welcome guests of every race, religion and identity, and will do all we can to ensure that you feel safe and comfortable while you are on the homestead. There are no shared spaces, but this suite is located inside our family home, which means you will hear our family :) This is NOT a good fit for romantic getaways. Please consider this accommodation akin to staying in a museum - its not a vacation rental, but we think lovers of old houses will agree that it's really special.
The Daboll Homestead is our twist on a traditional inn: the space is thoughtfully equipped, perfect for solo travelers and duos. With many original details throughout, and lots of modern touches (including a/c and an EV charger!) we work hard to ensure you have everything you might need for a relaxing experience. This 500 sq. ft. suite includes a bedroom and bathroom, and is located on the first floor. There are some accessibility limitations to staying in a preserved historic home, but we have tried to disclose and provide photos of areas that may present a challenge. The bed is now a queen size with a firm mattress and a foam topper.
***** Please review all of the details and photos of this unique space *located within our home* before booking. There are also videos on our social media channels - search for Daboll Homestead. We want you to be sure the accommodations suit your needs, and that it feels like a good fit for you!
The Daboll Homestead, built in the 1700s, is set on an acre of land near crossroads that have been traveled for hundreds of years. We are close to everything this area has to offer. It is a short drive to Mystic, the Sub Base, Pfizer, Electric Boat, General Dynamics, Connecticut College and Mitchell College, Avery Point, the Coast Guard Academy, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos, and we are conveniently located just moments from I-95. This is a busy road. We provide a fan for white noise but you may hear hear cars passing and the occasional siren.
This guest suite is definitely not your run-of-the-mill rental. It includes a patio, private entrance, bedroom and bathroom, as well as the exclusive use of a sitting and dining area.
The Special Touches you can expect: A selection of pillows is provided for your comfort, and the room has heavy curtains to keep the light to a minimum while you are sleeping. Linens for bed and bath are 100% cotton, laundered in unscented detergent for sensitive skin. All areas are disinfected *thoroughly* between guests, and all bedding and pillows are fresh and clean for each stay. We provide shampoo, conditioner and body wash, and have a few toiletries tucked away under the sink in case you forget something at home!
We do not allow food prep or additional appliances, but there is a drink fridge, small microwave and k-cup machine.
This Guest Suite is separated from the main house by several locked doors.
PRIVATE SPACES
The Bedroom: A spacious bedroom with one full-sized (double) vintage sleigh bed. A sunny and restful space. There is a TV in this room.
The Bathroom: The large private bathroom is located just outside of the bedroom, with an easily accessible step-in shower (no tub), heated towel bar and heat lamp.
PUBLIC SPACES EXCLUSIVELY FOR GUESTS
***The sitting/dining area is exclusively for guests - but only a locked door separates it from the owners’ quarters. Privacy is limited here and it should be regarded as a public space for all intents and purposes. (Zoom calls should be taken in your guest room, for example.)***
The Sitting Room: There are sofas, a mini refrigerator (no freezer), a small microwave, a k-cup coffee maker, and an assortment of teas and coffees. There is a non-functioning fireplace.
Dining Area: There is a dining table for you to enjoy take out meals from one of the many local restaurants. There is also outdoor seating on the guest patio.
WHY ALL THE RULES?
I cannot stress this enough: you will be staying in our home. Can we take a minute for some real talk? The past few years, we have had several instances of hosts and guests not following AirBnb rules, house rules, or even just the basic golden rule of human kindness. Some folks did not read our listing before booking, and didn't realize they were staying in our home. We have had property destroyed, children left unattended, extra guests staying without being on the reservation, and received special requests more suited to a six-star resort.
Don't be that guy.
It's been - to be honest - kind of a bummer. Please read the listing carefully and follow the directions and house rules. Please don't come here and party. Don't make a huge mess or leave the place a wreck. Our cleaning fee covers having the space thoroughly and professionally cleaned between guests, rather than charging more per night. But if there is an exceptional mess, we will take photos and report it, and you will be charged.
We use this space ourselves most of the year, and only share it on AirBnb occasionally. Due to our daughter's severe allergies, we do not allow animals in our guest suite and there is absolutely ZERO tolerance for smoking. We will know if you are smoking or have a companion animal, and you will be asked to leave. We will also know if there is an extra guest. This is a peaceful place to stay for folks who are conscientious guests.
MORE DETAILS
Heating and Cooling: In addition to central heating, we frequently use a wood-burning stove for heat during the cooler months, and also provide a supplemental electric heater in the guest room and bathroom. A window a/c unit is installed during the summer.
Again, please look through the photos and review all of the details provided to get a better idea of this space. Our goal as your host is to anticipate everything you will need for a comfortable, affordable stay - but if we forgot something, please do not hesitate to ask!
Guest access
Guests have a grass path to follow around back to their private entrance. The suite is as described. Please read all details carefully, as this is a unique space within our full-time residence.
Other things to note
Owner has been trained to sanitize by CT Dept. of Health. Everyone's collective safety and comfort is our ultimate concern.
This guest suite is located within our home. We ask that guests please be respectful of the fact that this is a home with children, and follow house rules. We are quiet in the evenings, and ask the same of our guests.
The fireplace in the sitting area is purely decorative and not for guest use. There is a fire pit in the yard - please advise if you plan to use it and we will set up some logs and provide chairs.
We are located on a gravel drive. Entrance to the guest space requires parking and then walking across grass. Roller suitcases and stiletto heels can be difficult to navigate both indoors and out at this property. A car is a must to get around the area - Uber and Lyft are available, as are food delivery services.
