The space
The room
A spacious and comfortable private suite with its own bathroom, a separate sitting room and an outdoor balcony. The windows face the forest and mountains towards the sunrise, filling the room with soft natural light in the morning.
The bedroom has a comfortable double bed, warm lighting and a relaxed vintage character created by carefully chosen furniture and details. We provide a choice of pillows, including hypoallergenic filling and natural goose down, along with linen bed sheets and soft towels.
The adjoining sitting room is a small, bright space with a table and chairs, a capsule coffee machine and an electric kettle — a comfortable place for morning coffee, reading or simply enjoying the mountain views.
The private bathroom is one of the suite’s most distinctive features. The shower is set into a cave-like alcove finished in natural stone, creating an unusual, almost grotto-like atmosphere. It also features a large rainfall showerhead.
The balcony and east-facing windows are another highlight: in the morning, the first light appears over the mountains and gradually fills the room.
The house
Stone Oven House is an old mountain house that we have been gradually restoring for many years. It is at once our home, a place for guests and an international artist residency.
We are professional artists, and over time the house and the land around it have become part of our creative practice. Old stone walls sit alongside restored furniture, contemporary details, artworks and objects made specifically for this place.
The house is still evolving. From time to time, you may see work happening in the garden, firewood being prepared, repairs, building projects or a new artistic intervention taking shape.
The grounds
Around the house are roughly two hectares of gardens, woodland, clearings and grazing meadows. Guests are free to explore the grounds, use the gardens and terraces, and find quiet places to read, work or rest.
This is not a manicured park, but a living mountain property with its own everyday rhythms. Harvests are gathered, the garden and woodland are maintained, firewood is prepared, and temporary fencing may appear in the meadows when animals are grazing.
Some corners feel almost like a garden, while others remain close to wild. Fruit trees, herbs and vegetable plots sit alongside woodland, old stone and art objects that gradually become part of the landscape.
The house stands right at the edge of the forest, so you can set off almost immediately on foot into the woods and continue along mountain trails.
There is a small pond and a stream on the property. In spring, the stream fills with water and runs noisily down the slope; in summer it may almost completely dry up, leaving small sunlit pools behind.
Snow falls occasionally in winter. It rarely stays for long, but when it does, the house and forest around it are completely transformed. The nearest ski area is about a 40-minute drive away.
Flora and fauna
Chestnuts, apple trees, walnuts, blackberries, kiwis and many wild herbs grow here. In spring we gather linden blossom, in autumn chestnuts and mushrooms, and the kiwis ripen towards the end of November.
There are beehives on the property, and sometimes you can taste local honey made by bees foraging right around the house.
At different times of year, cows, donkeys and other farm animals graze in the meadows. In the forest and around the house you may also come across salamanders, lizards, frogs and many species of birds. Several calm semi-feral cats live here too.
Despite all the greenery and water, mosquitoes are usually surprisingly scarce. For the occasional stray one, the guest rooms are equipped with plug-in mosquito repellents.
Early summer is a particularly special time. From around mid-June to mid-July, fireflies appear in the evenings around the house, sometimes in large numbers.
Evening and night
In the evening, the grounds are lit with soft, warm light. We deliberately avoid bright outdoor lighting: there is enough light to move comfortably around the house and garden without losing the natural darkness.
In early summer, fireflies flicker among the grass and trees, and on clear nights the stars are beautifully visible above the house.
Guest access
Guests can use the shared spaces at Stone Oven House and the grounds around the property, including the gardens and terraces, pool, relaxation areas, shared kitchen, summer kitchen and other common spaces.
All of these areas are shared with other guests unless the entire Stone Oven House is booked for private use.
Pool
There is a small outdoor pool, just over four metres long. It is available to all guests and included in the price of the stay. The pool is not heated.
It is usually open, but may occasionally need to close temporarily for cleaning, maintenance or water treatment. If the pool is an important part of your stay, please check its availability for your dates in advance.
Cold plunge, outdoor bath and hot tub
Next to the sauna there is a small plunge tub that can be filled with cold water, for example to cool down after a sauna session.
Elsewhere on the property, there is also a regular outdoor bathtub that can be filled with hot water for a relaxing bath outside.
In addition, we have a heated hot tub with hydromassage, suitable for up to four people at a time. It can be used throughout the year, but requires advance preparation and heating. For this reason, the hot tub is available on request and for an additional fee.

Sauna
There is a wood-fired sauna on the property. A small additional fee applies and includes membership of the Stone Oven House association, which owns the sauna, as well as the costs of preparing and maintaining it.
Shared loft and exhibition spaces
The house includes a large open loft with a wooden floor. It is a shared space where guests can practise yoga, stretch or dance, work, read or simply spend time.
Parts of the house are also used as exhibition spaces. The displays change over time, and you may find works by artists who have stayed or worked at the Stone Oven House residency.
For children
There are swings, small play areas and toys for children around the property. This is not a formal playground in the usual sense, but a number of informal play areas spread throughout the house and garden.
Stone oven, BBQ and courtyard
In the courtyard there is an old stone oven that gave Stone Oven House its name. From time to time we use it to bake bread, pizza and other food. The oven needs some preparation, so if you would like to use it, please arrange it with us in advance.
Guests can also use the BBQ area and the outdoor fire area when weather and safety conditions allow.
There is also a bar counter in the courtyard, which can be used for dinners, aperitivo or a small gathering. If you are planning to get together as a group or organise something a little livelier, please discuss it with us in advance.
During your stay
Stone Oven House consists of two houses facing each other. The guest rooms are in a separate building, while we live in the house opposite, so we are usually nearby and happy to help if anything comes up.
Our house sometimes hosts other guests, resident artists, friends or project participants as well. Our residents range from young artists at the beginning of their careers to established artists, writers and filmmakers whose work can be found in museums, libraries and cinemas around the world. Here, though, you are more likely to meet them simply over a shared dinner or a conversation by the fire.
We live here with our two young children, Yara and Teo, so Stone Oven House is also a family home with its own everyday rhythm.
Sometimes we have dinner together, cook, sit by the fire or host small events. There is no expectation to take part: you are welcome to join the life of the house as much as you like, or spend your time entirely on your own.
We try to be available when needed while giving guests plenty of space for quiet, work and rest.
Other things to note
Stone Oven House is difficult to fit into a single familiar category. We have tried to combine what we ourselves value in small boutique hotels, artist residencies and good glamping places: comfort and attention to detail, together with the possibility of meeting people, sharing moments and occasionally taking part in the life of the house.
Socialising is never expected, though. It is just as easy to spend a few quiet days on your own as it is to meet other guests, resident artists and the hosts. For us, this freedom to choose is one of the things that makes Stone Oven House special.
We pay a lot of attention to the rooms themselves: comfortable mattresses, hypoallergenic protective covers, natural cotton bed linen, warm lighting and the small practical details that make a stay feel easy. Some guests compare the level of comfort to a good boutique hotel, while the atmosphere remains that of a real home. Perhaps that is why many people tell us they feel at home here almost immediately.
Stone Oven House has a different rhythm at different times of year. Sometimes we host exhibitions, workshops, gatherings or other cultural events, and the house becomes more lively. At other times there are no events, only a few guests, and the atmosphere is very quiet. If this matters to you, you are welcome to ask what is planned for your dates and choose either a more active period or a quieter time for privacy and rest.
The house is historic, and during its restoration we have tried to preserve its original structure: the size of the rooms, ceiling heights, proportions and old walls. This is an important part of its character, but it also means that sound insulation is not the same as in a modern building. At times you may hear other people through walls or doors, and the old wooden floors can creak underfoot.
The surrounding area itself is usually very quiet. Many guests, especially those arriving from large cities, comment on the sense of peace here. But it is not sterile silence: in the morning you may hear a rooster, cowbells from the meadows, donkeys, birds, wind, rain or the occasional sound of village life in the distance.
If you are particularly sensitive to noise, it is worth keeping in mind that this is an old lived-in house, not a building with studio-grade soundproofing. For most guests these sounds are simply part of its character, but if you need near-total acoustic isolation, it is useful to know this in advance.
Rorà is a small mountain village and public transport is limited. A car is the easiest option, but not essential. If you are travelling without one, let us know in advance: we can suggest the best route and, when possible, help arrange a transfer from the nearest public transport stop.
And yet, people often sleep remarkably well here. Guests regularly tell us they have not slept so deeply in a long time: cool mountain air, greenery outside the window, the quiet of the forest and the natural rhythm of the day seem to do their work. In the morning, you may wake not to an alarm, but to daylight, birdsong and the feeling that you have genuinely rested.
