*** A/Cs & TV SITUATION***
We made an intentional decision to NOT provide central air conditioning in the home. This helps keep monthly costs down and makes it possible to offer our guests more home and value at a lower nightly rate. There is a new 50” Roku Smart TV in the living room for use with your own subscriptions.
AIR CON:
There are newer air conditioning units in all 3 bedrooms. No AC throughout the rest of the home. If you and/or any member of your travel party feels that whole home air conditioning is a necessity to have a more pleasant experience, this may not be the home for you. We much prefer that you choose another home where you will be completely comfortable. We provide ceiling and floor fans throughout the house and plenty of fresh ocean breezes to keep you energized. Be mindful that some days are breezier than others and everyone’s heat tolerance is different. Generally, from November thru March, temperatures are cooler than the rest of the year and some evenings may even get on the chilly side. NOTE: when the power grid goes down, our backup batteries automatically turn on and everything will be available to use EXCEPT THE AIR CONDITIONERS. The batteries do not have enough power to run AC once the sun goes down/non-daylight hours.
ISLAND WILDLIFE:
Be mindful you are in a tropical paradise. You will see local wildlife (lots of iguanas, small lizards, birds, bats, frogs, etc) outside the home and may encounter small lizards inside the home. They are harmless and help eat other pests such as spiders, flies etc. The home is professionally treated by an exterminator once a month for ants, roaches, etc but be mindful this is still the tropics, and you will see insects from time to time.
LOCATION:
Casa Ocean Breeze is situated along Highway 2 in between Plaza Del Norte in Hatillo and Plaza Del Atlantico in Arecibo; both are major shopping malls along the island’s north shore in the heart of Arecibo’s busiest commercial area. You have quick and direct access to major roadways (no sketchy side streets to maneuver) such as Hwy 2 which leads west and Hwy 10 which runs south towards Ponce. Within 10 minutes drive or less, you’ll find Denny’s restaurant, Krispy Kreme, Chick Fil-A, Burlingtons, Sam’s Club, Super Walmart, 2 movie theaters (Caribbean Cinemas), Home Depot, JC Penney, TJ Maxx, Cold Stone, supermarkets, bars, plenty of American fast food chains and endless local restaurant options offering Puerto Rican fare. Our closest swimming beach, Playa Sardinera is our personal favorite at just 10 mins away and always offers gentle waves and a truly local vibe.
CONTACTLESS FLEXIBLE CHECK-IN:
Our check-in process is 100% contact-less as we have always utilized a lock box for access. We offer a flexible check-in time. If you plan to check-in before 10am, you must book the night before so that the home will be 100% ready for your early arrival. We will continue to practice high standards of cleaning and sanitation, ensuring we follow CDC and Airbnb guidelines for best practices. In addition, we pay special attention to high touch areas and will provide some cleaning products to use during your stay for added peace of mind. We observe a minimum 48 hour gap between reservations.
OUR SOLAR SYSTEM:
Puerto Rico still experiences periodic power and water outages. Our guests do not need to worry about being stranded without power as we are fully equipped with solar panels and Generac batteries. In the event of a rare water outage, we have TWO 600 gallon water tanks (cisterns) on site for added peace of mind which is supplied with 100% rainwater, which is collected and filtered for your safe use and consumption.
NOTE: when the power grid goes down, which it does periodically, esp. during peak hours (6pm-10pm) on super hot, humid days, our backup batteries automatically turn on and everything will be available to use EXCEPT THE AIR CONDITIONERS. The batteries do not have enough power to run AC once the sun goes down/overnight. More info about our solar system is available in the living room welcome guide.
MINI-FARM:
In late 2023, our chicken farm was born. Our amazing neighbor built for us, a spacious and strong chicken coop from scratch and we now have several resident female hens that provide organic cage-free eggs daily. You will see them free roaming the backyard during the day. We also have a few quail birds that provide fresh eggs daily. Their eggs are smaller in size and tastes/fries up just like regular chicken eggs. We provide all our guests with the freshest eggs that can be left out on the counter-top just prior to cooking. Just give each egg a quick rinse and you’re good to go! Our farm also has bananas, plantains, guava, cassava, and breadfruit. If any are ready for harvest before your arrival, we will leave the harvest in the kitchen for your enjoyment!
LIVING AREA:
A beautiful set of glass and iron doors open to an oversized living room with a large comfortable sectional couch for you to curl up in after a long day of exploring! Or you can swing along with the steady ocean breezes from our comfy blue hanging hammock chair. We provide a 50” Roku smart TV for use with your own streaming subscriptions. From here, you might even spot an iguana or three catching some sun or munching on grass. At night, you might be really lucky to spot a coqui singing to you nearby. You will also find books about the island’s history along with travel books for ideas on places to visit and things to see. A printed welcome guide will provide our personal recommendations on local places to visit and places to eat.
KITCHEN:
You'll be prepared to make a delicious meal in the fully equipped kitchen loaded with glassware, utensils, pots/pans, and newer appliances; gas stove/oven and above-the-range microwave, full sized fridge and small appliances like a toaster and blender. Grab some groceries at one of many nearby grocery stores (Econo, Super Walmart, Hatillo Kash N Karry) and your home cooked meal possibilities are endless. We provide a complimentary coffee/tea station with some fixings. Under-cabinet lighting helps brighten the counters at night.
DINING:
The living area leads directly to the dining/kitchen areas thru a beautiful archway where your party can comfortably dine on a home cooked meal. The focal point in this room is of course, a direct view to the ocean with close proximity to the kitchen. The ceiling fan is a welcome feature on warmer days. Talk about dinner with a view!

We provide hammocks, rocking chairs, and general outdoor seating/tables for lounging outside, as well as everyday household items including a hair dryer, iron/ironing board, shampoo/conditioner, toilet paper and bath soap. We provide a starter amount of perishable kitchen/bath items commensurate with the length of your stay such as a full bag of local coffee and one full roll of paper towels. You are responsible for purchasing items beyond what is provided at the start of your stay. On the front patio, you will find beach chairs, an umbrella, cooler, snorkels and floaties for the beach. We provide a sand-washing station on the front lawn for beach gear and clothing lines for bathing suits & towels. There is a newer washing machine in the primary bath for your exclusive use. A dryer is NOT available. Live like a local and hang your clothes out to dry! It’s eco-friendly :)
On rainy days, you can lounge around, watch TV, read a book on a hammock, settle into a rocking chair, catch up on your shows, play board games or cook a meal to enjoy with your travel squad. Whatever your reason for visiting Puerto Rico, we're confident that our home will exceed your expectations. We knew it was the vacation home of our dreams the moment we stepped onto the balcony and gazed out to the Atlantic.

Guest access
The main glass and iron entrance door has a lockbox and the code shared with online self check-in/out instructions. This home has 3 floors. Your rental includes the entire top level only. The top level is street level, no stairs to navigate. The lower floors are not guest spaces. NO backyard access.
Other things to note
It is an intentional decision to NOT provide ACs in every room. We have newer AC units in all 3 bedrooms. This helps keep monthly costs down and makes it possible to offer our guests more value. There are ceiling and floor fans throughout the house and plenty of fresh ocean breezes to keep you cool. Besides, you did come to Puerto Rico to enjoy the beautiful outdoors!
There is a newer washing machine in the primary bathroom for your exclusive use. You provide the detergent. There is no dryer, we have provided drying lines on the back balcony for your convenience.
We have 3 outdoor security cameras throughout the house, all are in plain sight: 1 camera is mounted to the house that faces the street and 2 are on the lower level facing the driveways.
Please remember that you're staying in our home, not a hotel. Please leave it in the same general condition as it was left for you. Thank you.

VACA NEGRA MAKE-YOUR-OWN-CHEESE TOUR DISCOUNT - READ ON!
The home is located in a safe, middle-class residential community of professionals at the end of a super quiet, dead end street which offers plenty of privacy. Within 5-15 minutes drive, you will find tons of stores, 2 movie theaters, grocery stores, pharmacies and all types of restaurants plus gas stations, banks, fast food restaurants, Walgreens, CVS, a Super Walmart and JC Penney, especially convenient if you forgot something from home. There are many delicious local restaurants, food trucks and street vendors selling fresh fruit, prepared snack foods, hammocks, souvenirs and other wares along Highway 2. Travel the northern coast along highway 681 to Islote's developing tourist area if you're willing to venture off the beaten path.
Arecibo and the North shore of the island has many attractions that make for great day trips. We’re right on the border of Hatillo, the only town on the island that has more cows than people -It’s true!
For a truly local experience you can take home with you, Vaca Negra, just 5 minutes drive away, offers a 2 hour Make-Your-Own Cheese tour! They can even mail the cheese to your home once it’s aged in their facilities after 2 months. We’ve taken the tour ourselves and we highly recommend it! Once you confirm your stay, please message me for the contact information to book your tour! (Subject to availability). Visit their website for more info and check out their reviews on Trip Advisor. Book your tour early.
One of our favorite things to do is beach hopping (Playa Sardinera, Crashboat and La Poza) are very easy to get to, just plug in the name of the beach/attraction and your favorite GPS app will take you there. We also enjoy driving along highway 681 in Islote and making pit stops at the local dive bars and street vendors. Must-see area attractions include the Arecibo Observatory, Cueva Del Indio, the Arecibo Lighthouse and Cueva Ventana.
As far as restaurants, we frequently visit Vibra Buena, Miramar BBQ and El Truco de Guin. For drinks, you must try a Medalla or the passion fruit mojitos (mojito de parcha) at First Stop. Or try a pincho (a shish kebob) or piragua (shaved ice w/ your choice of flavoring) from a street vendor.

Meet your hosts
Where I went to school: Brooklyn Technical High School
My work: Family Owned Electrical Contractor
Currently, Josh and I live and work full-time for the family business; we’re a 5-star licensed electrical contractor based in Brooklyn, NYC.
Josh spent a large part of his childhood in Puerto Rico (Bayamón) and has lots of family who now live in Hatillo and Arecibo. Nerissa was born in Guyana in South America (a former British colony), the only country other than Brazil, where the primary language is English (no Spanish). She grew up in Queens, NYC and is a city girl at heart.
We met in college at Pace University in NYC, and have been married for 20+ years (no kids but we have plenty of the 4-legged kind). In 2015, Josh’s then employer offered him the opportunity of a lifetime to work full time in Puerto Rico! Nerissa’s employer offered her a full-time work from home Recruiting gig so she was also able to continue working from PR.
We spent most of 2015 living/working in Islote, Arecibo. In 2016, we started looking for and found our future retirement home, which we now lovingly call Casa Ocean Breeze. In September 2017, Hurricane Maria wrecked havoc on the island and the home did suffer some destruction but we were very blessed to quickly repair and/or replace what was damaged (sans FEMA). Now, every time we plan a home project, we ask ourselves, "Is this going to be Hurricane Maria proof?”
When we’re not working, Josh and I like to travel, especially to beach destinations. We enjoy spending time with family, friends and our fur children. We also love hiking, snorkeling, live concerts, reading and working around the house.
We hope you'll stay with us!
