Neighborhood highlights

Famous for its spectacular setting, this vertical town is a resort destination and international fashion center.
Positano, like the legendary Sirens of Li Galli, never fails to seduce
Seen from the sea, Positano is set in a dramatic vertical panorama of colors; the green of the Monti Lattari, the white, pink, and yellow of the Mediterranean houses; the silvery grey of its pebble beaches; and the blue of the sea.

Stroll along Via Pasitea to admire the shops selling "pezze di Positano" (local resort wear in linen and silk) or relax on one of the terraces to admire the views over the colorful houses tumbling down the cliffside.
One of the most famous landmarks in Positano is the colorful majolica cupola of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which houses the Byzantine Madonna Nera that is the object of much devotion among locals. This historic icon was found on the beach after a violent storm and on that site, the church was built. You can also visit the ancient Roman domus next to the church, the recently excavated ruins of a seaside villa with frescos similar to those found in Pompeii. The Roman Archaeological Museum where the villa is located is open all year round for guided visits.

Be sure to take in the Saracen towers, ancient watchtowers that were built on strategic spots along the coast and were used to protect the locals from pirates. Positano is home to three of these: Torre Trasita, Torre di Sponda, and Torre di Fornillo.

From Positano, head up to Montepertuso and the hamlet of Nocelle to walk along the Path of the Gods to Agerola.

The easiest way to get from Positano to nearby towns and Capri is with the ferries and boats that set off from the small pier in Positano. Otherwise, there are Sita buses. We do not suggest driving due to the heavy traffic and limited parking. For couples, the most convenient way to get around is by scooter.

The largest neighborhood of positano( CHIESA NUOVA)
The CHIESA NUOVA is the group of houses that rises higher and is among the oldest in the country, cut in two by a rolling road, but united in a tangle of legends that tell of Arab past and ancient traditions.
The Church, from which the neighborhood takes its name (Chiesa Nuova), is the only one in the country with an elliptical plan; there are those who say that it was a mosque with a characteristic domed roof, built when the people of Positano, in their trade with the East, had made great friendships with their customers to the point of consecrating a place to their religion. Inside there are ancient paintings and a cinerary urn of the Roman sacristy of the first century after Christ.
Other Arab influences can be read in a road connecting the neighborhood with Santa Maria del Castello, a mountain hamlet of Vico Equense, which was built by Moorish prisoners in the 1700s.
Walking through the alleys and stairs of the neighborhood you will find the villas that hosted great personalities such as Irene Kowaliska and Irmin Wegnere or even Karol Wojtyla when he was a seminarian.
In the chiesa nuova area you will find the restaurant C'era una volta and the grottino azzurro restaurant after the international bar next to the bus stops located for sorrento and amalfi. You will also find a tobaccoshop with ATM, a Grocery shop, the townhall of positano, the post office with ATM, a fish shop, a fruit shop, a pastry shop and the local bus stop to center of positano at the corner of via pasitea near the tobacco shop.Via Pasitea starts from the Chiesa Nuova and ends in Piazza dei Mulini (1,5 Km).
I'd highly recommend renting a vespa to get around Positano and the neighboring towns during your stay. It's definitely the best way to get around the coast!
