Room in a bed and breakfast

Your own room in a home, plus access to shared spaces.
Nestled on a hillside in regenerating native bush, featuring stunning views of the Hauraki Gulf, Buffalo Lodge is an architecturally designed rustic lodge that blends nature with relaxed comfort. Recently renovated, it’s ideal for a retreat, or as a home base for exploring the renowned beaches and hiking trails of the Coromandel. Take in the sea views, lush surroundings, and memorable sunsets from the sundeck while enjoying pared-back luxury and modern indulgences.

The space
There are 4 guest rooms total at Buffalo Lodge, so outside of your private room and bathroom, you might have neighbours sharing public spaces (i.e., the sundeck, library, lounge, and dining hall) with you. It’s a wonderful place to meet people but, if you’re preferring privacy, there is plenty of space for you to be on your own as well.

Rooms 1 and 2 in Buffalo Lodge each have their own private deck, and they are located next to one another on the main floor. Rooms 3 and 4 are located upstairs and, though they don’t have private decks attached to them, they have their own private bathrooms and are on opposite sides of the library, which happens to be our favourite space in the Lodge. Also, Room 4 is the Master Bedroom — it offers the most space of any of the 4 rooms and has some lovely, unique features to it.

The shared, public spaces include the library (upstairs between Rooms 3 and 4) as well as the lounge, dining hall, and the sundeck on the main floor. A simple continental breakfast is provided. Please note we do not have a kitchen available for lunch and dinner. Instead we can give recommendations for good food in town and around the peninsula, and you're welcome to bring takeaway food back to the lodge to eat. We recommend dinner at sunset on the shared sundeck; the views at that hour are particularly memorable.

During your stay
We're mindful that guests have different preferences when it comes to engaging with hosts. We're happy to follow your lead in this regard. We're here for you for as much or as little interaction as you'd like.

Other things to note
Accessibility | Buffalo Lodge is located on a steep hill. Unfortunately, at this time we don’t have accessibility features available for those with health conditions or physical impairments which limit their ability to walk up stairs. We hope to offer more accessibility features in the future.

Sound proofing | Buffalo Lodge offers 4 guest rooms in a lodge style accommodation. At times you may hear your neighbours from your room. Other times, particularly during windy, stormy weather, you might hear the house creaking. To ensure that guests are as comfortable as possible, we’ve provided Yogasleep White Noise Machines in each room that offer 30 different sound options (including white, pink, and brown noises) to enhance the sense of privacy in your room.

The road and the ford | When driving up the hill to Buffalo Lodge, you’ll follow a gravel road which is fairly steep. This is how we access the property every day, so it’s perfectly safe to drive on, just take it slow and steady. At one point on the road up to Buffalo Lodge there is a small ford to cross. If it has been raining heavily or for a prolonged period, it may have water running over it but, even in those cases, it should still be safe to cross. If you’re arriving during heavy rains, and you don’t feel comfortable driving over the ford, just give us a call or send us a message and we’ll come and get you.

Parking | There’s free parking available for all guests. 2 spaces are available in the carport, though they can be a snug fit. More spaces are available just below the carport and driveway on the left side of the gravel road.

Heating and cooling | Buffalo Lodge gets great sun exposure and does not have air conditioning. As a result, on sunny days in summer, it can get hot inside the Lodge. Similarly, in winter, it can get cold, as there is no central heating.

To make guests as comfortable as possible in a range of temperatures, Buffalo Lodge offers the following in all guest rooms:

For hot weather:
-window insect screens to increase air flow while keeping mozzies out
-a remote control bladeless fan
-a selection of different blankets suitable for various temperatures

For cold weather:
-an electric heater
-a selection of different blankets suitable for various temperatures

Where you’ll be

Coromandel, Waikato, New Zealand

Buffalo Lodge is located within the Whakanekeneke Catchment Area of the Coromandel Range. Surrounded by regenerating native bush, the neighbourhood is quiet and secluded while still offering easy access to Driving Creek Railway and Coromandel Town.

Well known for its relaxed lifestyle, pristine beaches and diverse hiking trails, Coromandel Town is home to a rich community of artists from around the world. The Driving Creek Railway and Pottery (described below), in particular, is a must see, but you also won't want to miss the Coromandel Arts Tour or a visit to local artists' galleries. Here are some of our favourite things to do around Coromandel Town and the wider peninsula:

1.9 km away | Driving Creek Railway and Pottery | Established in 1972 as one of New Zealand's first potteries, Driving Creek has become a hub for artists worldwide. Hop on the railway tour through regenerating native forest up to the EyeFull Tower for phenomenal views of the Coromandel coastline. Afterwards, take part in a pottery workshop, or glide through the kauri canopies on a zipline tour.

2.0 km away | Success Track | An 8-9 km return, the Success Track is an out-and-back trail starting from behind the Old Coromandel Hospital Building. It takes you up into the bush, eventually reaching 586 metres above sea level at the top of the ridge. Bring lunch and take in the sweeping views of the Coromandel Harbour at the top of the track.

6.1 km away | Long Bay Walk | Walk along the coastline from Long Bay to Tucks Bay, the ideal spot for a quiet picnic on the beach. Afterwards, continue on to the Long Bay Kauri Walk, where you're sure to be awestruck by the 1200-year-old kauri tree.

14 km away | Waiau Kauri Grove and Waterfall | Take a dip in the area's best swimming hole, and follow it up with a quick loop (20-30 minute return) through the mature kauri grove.

15 km away | Castle Rock (Motutere) | A steep, challenging track which is not easy to find, those who manage to make it to the top of Motutere aka Castle Rock are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the Coromandel Range and the surrounding coastline.

22.5 km away | New Chums (Wainuiototo) Beach | One of New Zealand's most iconic and yet still untouched beaches, New Chums lives up to the hype. You will be pleasantly surprised by how secluded it can feel in spite of its renowned beauty. Depending on the day, you could easily have the entire beach to yourself.

32 km away | Kūaotunu | Soak in the beach town vibes with a strong cup of coffee at Kua Kawhe followed by a wood-fired pizza at Luke's Kitchen. The fish wrap is also sneaky superb at Luke's, perfect right after a surf or swim.

58 km away | Cathedral Cove (Te Whanganui-A-Hei) | This unique, naturally formed archway — which can only be accessed by foot, kayak, or boat — is well worth the trek. Regardless of how you get there, we recommend giving yourself plenty of time to take in Cathedral Cove. You won't want to leave.

61 km away | Coromandel Coastal Walkway | This 10 km track between Fletcher and Stony Bay Campsites offers a mix of lush native bush and breathtaking ocean views at the northernmost tip of the Coromandel Peninsula. If you're not up for the entirety of the 7-hour return trip, you can book in to be dropped off on one side and picked up on the other.

78 km away | Kauaeranga Kauri Trail (Pinnacles Walk) in the Coromandel Forest Park | This popular trail climbs up steadily to the Pinnacles summit, where the views of the Coromandel Forest Park and Kauaeranga Valley are just spectacular. Suitable for a day trip or an overnight stay at the Pinnacles Hut, it's definitely worth checking out while you're here.

100 km away | Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway | Ideal for a day trip, take in the immensity of the gorge while following the old railway line between Paeroa and Waihi. Along the way you'll discover heritage sites documenting the history of the mining and railway eras.
