The space
Bridge End Bunkie is a quiet, off‑grid retreat nestled deep in a cedar forest on the historic Ball’s Bridge Stone House property, overlooking the Maitland River. This is a place to slow down, breathe in the scent of the woods, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being surrounded by nature. With no hydro or running water, the bunkie offers a rustic, back‑to‑basics experience that is comfortable, peaceful, and intentionally unplugged.

The setting is truly special. From your private riverside firepit, you’ll have a beautiful, unobstructed view of Ball’s Bridge—an iconic 1885 wrought‑iron Pratt truss bridge and one of Huron County’s most beloved landmarks. Evenings by the fire are unforgettable here, with the sound of the river flowing past and the forest settling into dusk. Firewood is provided, and guests are welcome to cook over the fire or use the provided BBQ which includes a side burner for heating water or making coffee. An additional sink area includes cookware, dishes, cutlery, and a wash basin with fresh water. A picnic table and pop‑up shelter are available for outdoor meals in any weather.

Inside the bunkie, the sleeping arrangements are cozy and flexible. The upper loft features a thick, comfortable queen mattress, while the main floor has a daybed with two twin mattresses that can be placed side‑by‑side to form a king. The space comfortably accommodates two adults and two children. Two small but mighty rechargable lights are provided, but guests should bring a flashlight for moving around after dark. For those who enjoy tenting, there is a large mowed area beside the river, and one additional tent may be set up upon request.

The “Trout House,” a sawdust composting outhouse, is located nearby and maintained with care. While there is no shower facility, most guests find the simplicity adds to the charm of the experience.

Bridge End Bunkie is ideal for hikers, cyclists, paddlers, artists, and anyone seeking a peaceful nature escape. The Maitland Trail connects directly at Ball’s Bridge, and the Goderich‑to‑Guelph Rail Trail is only minutes away, making this an excellent stop for long‑distance hikers and cyclists. Short trails wind through the property, perfect for morning walks or quiet sketching sessions. Artists are encouraged to bring their supplies, and private sketching lessons with Elizabeth can be arranged.

Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the Maitland River’s excellent opportunities. Licenses can be purchased online, and if you’re keen, the host’s husband may even share a few flies and a fly rod. Guests are welcome to bring kayaks, tubes, or floaties, and the popular Auburn‑to‑Bridge End float is a favourite. Depending on water levels, the trip takes between two and five hours. A guest sketchbook and watercolour set are provided for those who wish to leave a creative note behind.

Enjoy the use of our river canoe for a peaceful sunset paddle around the bridge and upriver toward the rapids.

Goderich is just a 15‑minute drive away for dining, shopping, and supplies.

Your stay includes bedding, firewood, propane, the use of our river canoe and HST all included in the nightly rate.

Guest access
Bridge End Bunkie is situated in the edge of the cedar forest, riverside just a short 5 min walk downhill from the house where you would park your car just off the driveway.

Should you require assistance bring your things down to the river we have a side-by-side that that we can use to take things down to the river.

If you bring kayaks or a canoe they can be launched from the other side of the bridge on Little Lakes Road (which now has an accessible dock)and paddled across as there is ample space to maneuver a vehicle near the river there.

Other things to note
There are no other rentals on this exclusive riverfront property. I do use the trails to exercise my dogs and the river to cool them off especially on hot days so please let me know if you are afraid of or uncomfortable around dogs. I also love to fish and paddle about in my canoe will occasionally be in and out of the area to check on things or access the river.

Please consider inviting me to join your evening fire as I have opened up this precious space to share it with like minded people and meet new travellers.
