Comfy bed for better sleep

The room-darkening shades and extra bedding are loved by guests.
A modern, but cozy, 562-sq.-ft. loft apartment with full kitchen and bath, queen bed (with a Winkbeds Luxury Firm mattress)a twin Murphy Bed / desk, living room, walk-in closet, FireStick, Roku, DVD player, WiFi and more.

Note that the barn is in our back yard and part of our home, so we don't allow instant book. We know it's a bit of a pain, but hope everyone will understand given that we live here too.

The space
I built the apartment in 2013, then we repainted in 2016 and furnished it for Airbnb, and repainted and installed a new floor in 2022. It has a queen bed and a custom-built twin Murphy Bed.

We have a Samsung TV in the living room configured with a FireStick and the TiviMate application, which gives you access to 4,000+ network, cable, national and international channels (including 800 US Local channels -- so you might be able to watch your home-town news anchors and shows), and 4,000+ movies. This also allows you to log into your own streaming services such as Neflix, Hulu, HBO, Cinemax and so on.

We are next to a highway, so when outside, or if you open the windows, you will hear highway noise. But more than 100 guests have commented on how quiet it is inside the apartment when the windows are closed.

We do everything we can to minimize particulates and scents that can trigger asthma or allergies inside the apartment. So there are some things you may need to know:

1. Regrettably, any animal could create a health hazard for for my wife, so we can't host guests who travel with pets, SAs or ESAs. (The fair housing act's exception for people who rent a portion of their home makes this legally okay, and the health hazard fits within Airbnb's guidelines.)

2. If you smoke, please don't stay here. While we do appreciate that most smokers are very considerate, the particulates cling to clothing enough that it activates my wife's asthma when we clean, and some of our regular guests are even more sensitive so they can be affected as well.

3. If you have any type of severe allergy, feel free to tell us exactly what that is and we'll do our best to check the apartment for anything that can activate it. We aren't doctors and can't guarantee we'll get it right, but we'll try our best!

Guest access
You have free parking in our driveway, and independent, locked access to the apartment. The parking spot is 150 feet from the apartment with eight steps down as you traverse the sidewalk. There are 14 stairs up to the apartment, with no access for wheelchairs. You may use the shared patio just up the yard at the back of our house -- the way we see it, when you're here, you're family, and we hope you feel the same before you leave.

Other things to note
While the space can accommodate non-business travelers, it's also got everything the traveling business professional or salesperson will need, including a desk with wipe board and WiFi. We're located near the intersection of two major interstates (I-270 and I-55 in South County), so both Clayton and Downtown St. Louis are just 15- to 20-minute drives away.

Resources abound nearby. Within 2 miles are Target, Costco, a major retail mall, FedEx and UPS, five large grocers and a 20-plex cinema. Extend that to 4 miles, and you could visit the beautiful Grant’s Farm, enjoy nature on an 8-mile paved biking and walking trail, or wander through a 50,000-square-foot antique mall. Within minutes, you could be dining at any one of hundreds of restaurants – from fast food to fine dining. Yet, your accommodations are tucked into a cozy neighborhood with rolling hills.

As for comfort, you can adjust the thermostat yourself. The thermostat is limited to not colder than 72 in the summer nor warmer than 72 in the winter. But we’ll accommodate guests with medical requirements outside of those limits if they ask.

We prohibit smoking, e-cigarettes, incense, burning of candles, or anything else that will give the apartment a strong scent that might impact a future guest. We even strive to rent to non-smokers only, that way the particulates that cling to clothing can't be transferred to the couch, pillows, drapes, etc., and possibly affect future guests.

We have seven exterior security cameras monitoring the property 24/7, and motion detectors on the driveway and barn stairs -- there's a photo on our listing showing the feed angles if you want to see them. There are no cameras or detectors inside the apartment. Since 1985 when we bought the place we've had zero security issues, but we want you to feel as safe as possible, so we do the best we can.

Neighborhood highlights

You'll feel at home here (if a quiet neighborhood fits your definition of "home"). Our barn sits on nearly an acre lot, among the rolling hills of South County. We're close to an interstate, so you can hear the highway noise when you're outside. But the highway walls help. Trees abound, the neighbors are nice, and crime is virtually non-existent in this neck of the woods. We've lived here since 1985; it's a great neighborhood, not far from everything you'll need.

My work: Gill Wagner Connections
Lives in St. Louis, Missouri
"Business Gill" is a sales expert with 40+ years of advocacy for the elimination of deceit and dishonesty in the profession he loves. His peers named him the “Father of Honest Selling,” the “Best Business Connector in St. Louis” and one of the “Top 100 St. Louisans to Know” to succeed in business. His passion is sales and his model is prospecting, marketing and selling on a 100 percent commission basis. “Craftsman Gill” built a barn in his backyard and created a cozy loft apartment on the top floor, complete with hand-built cabinets throughout, a custom Murphy bed and a really cool headboard made from an old, wooden extension ladder. Business travelers can find the “Barndominium” on Airbnb if they’d like to ditch the St. Louis hotel routine and try something unique. “Hobby Gill” has ridden a bicycle 200 miles in 14 hours and then balanced it on his chin. He can say the alphabet in six different directions. Dogs follow him obediently. Puzzles fear him. And he can juggle anything from beanbags to bowling pins (both literally and metaphorically). “Husband Gillby” is a hopeless romantic who met the girl of his dreams at 14, FINALLY got her to go on a date with him at 22, married her at 23, and has claimed the title “World’s Most Sickeningly in Love Husband” for himself. He also calls the 7.5-year courtship “My most successful, long-term marketing plan ever.”
