The Writers' Treehouse is a cool, airy home 250m from the beach; it's surrounded by trees and a tropical garden, and has views across forested hills. Treehouse is an inspiring place in which to read, write, create, cook or relax (there are two swinging chairs), and from where to take long walks on an unspoiled beach. An eco-hotel is a 5-min walk away; you may use their pool if you have a meal or massage there. Medewi surf point is a 7-minute drive away.
The space
The Writers' Treehouse was built around an old mango tree; upstairs the glass doors open onto its branches and downstairs the house is open to the tropical environment. It is a very comfortable home – but this style of accommodation is not for everybody. If you are more comfortable in city spaces and are looking for a cocooned apartment or a hip neighbourhood like Canggu, then Treehouse is not for you... but if you're an independent traveller who enjoys being in nature and seeks to connect with the soul of a place, you're likely to consider Treehouse heaven.
* Please note that Treehouse is NOT a pet-friendly (dogs are welcome at Hidden Well, our charming cottage near Treehouse – please click my profile to view it). Also, we cannot accept bookings from people travelling with children under the age of 8, due to safety concerns relating to the design of the house (open staircase and full-length window-doors upstairs).
BEDROOM
Upstairs the large room is divided by a custom-designed cupboard (all furniture was made by local artisans). In one half is the queen-size bed, which has views across tree-tops to forest-covered hills. The other half is a studio space with packed book shelves, a hanging chair, a daybed and a desk.
BATHROOM
The outdoor bathroom (surrounded by a high stone wall) is shaded by palm trees lush with bromeliads, ferns and orchids. Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and hand wash are provided and yes, there is hot water :)
KITCHEN
The kitchen is well equipped with:
Fridge with freezer; gas stove; small electric oven; wok; pots; frying pan; filter coffee machine; blender; drinking water.
Baking equipment includes: muffin and loaf tin, digital scale, measuring cups and spoons.
WIFI
There is a 50MBPS fibre Internet connection. The speed does vary slightly, but it is more than sufficient to hold Zoom meetings, transfer high-res photos and watch Netflix.
SURFING & YOGA
There is a quiver of surfboards that you are welcome to use – they range from 5'8" to 9'0". Please bring your own leash. In the cupboard upstairs you'll find a yoga mat, two blocks and two straps.
Guest access
You will have full, exclusive use of The Writers' Treehouse.
Other things to note
The Writers' Treehouse is an enchanting base for travellers who're wanting to connect with nature and authentic Balinese village life. Our intention is for guests to feel at home and to experience the true magic of the area – so we provide a comprehensive "address book" and recommendations of places to go, things to do that will deepen your experience of West Bali.
EXPERIENCE LOCAL LIFE
On all bookings 3 nights or longer we offer a complimentary pink-buffalo and rice paddy experience – a wonderful opportunity to learn more about traditional Balinese life.
NEIGHBOURHOOD VIBES
On Wednesday nights (until around 9pm or 10pm), on a neighbouring property, the village's gamelan musicians practise angklung, a beautiful traditional music that features wind instruments; on some Thursday nights they practise joget, which is indigenous to West Bali and rarely heard or played outside of this area. You will hear this music from Treehouse, and you are so welcome watch this music being performed.
Karaoke has become popular in the village, and you will also hear the prayer calls from the village mosque, as well as roosters, dogs and birds. While these sounds might disturb light sleepers, they are an integral part of an authentic Bali experience.
If you're looking for a quiet, restorative retreat then you might consider staying Hidden Well, our cottage a few minutes' drive from Treehouse. Please click on my profile to view it.
We do our best to ensure that every guest’s stay is flawless, but from time to time things crop up that are beyond our control (eg loud music played at neighbourhood weddings / flying ants emerging after rain / the electricity or water supply is temporarily interrupted). Your comfort is our priority and we work closely with our community to ensure that anything that needs our attention is addressed as soon as possible.
NO DOGS, PLEASE
The Writers' Treehouse is NOT a pet-friendly property. If you're looking for somewhere that is, please click on my profile to connect with our other cottage, Hidden Well, where dogs are welcome.
