Guest access
You'll have access to your whole apartment with private entrances, and the large front yard and garden with a small kettle grill, a big charcoal grill/smoker, and a firepit.

Laundry is currently unavailable for guest use as a Covid precaution, as this is in a workspace that we use daily.

There is high-speed internet with WiFi... the log-in and password are on the guest info board in the apartment.

Please enjoy the spacious front yard, and feed some treats to the chickens if you like (there are bird treats in one of the feed bins by the coop- toss a handful into the run and make some feathered friends- just make sure to replace the cover on the bin)!

We have a fire pit and a charcoal grill/smoker in the yard- let us know if you'd like to use them during your stay!

Everything in the apartment is for the comfort of our guests- help yourself to anything in the fridge or pantry. Coffee, tea, creamer, snacks and some pantry staples are provided (hot cereal, homemade granola, a few canned goods, flour, sugar, rice, butter, pasta, popcorn, snack bars and ramen).

We usually stock the fridge with some adult beverages as a courtesy (local beers or a bottle of wine)- let us know if that is an issue for you and we will remove them before check in and provide non-alcoholic alternatives.

Other things to note
We have a big well-trained dog (our Catahoula, Tormod), but he is not left unattended in the yard. Please let us know if you are allergic and we will be extra mindful when we let him out! He doesn't have access to your apartment which has a private entrance and dedicated linens, although we prefer to only host guests who are comfortable with interacting with dogs (we want you to be able to relax during your stay!).

The building does not have central air. It's a garden/ground floor unit, so naturally stays much cooler than our home upstairs, but we have added a small window AC in the kitchen which is available when it's really hot to make sure you're comfortable (there will be an extension cord through the kitchen to the utility/laundry room).

There are also multiple fans, and unless it's really humid, it stays pretty comfortable just with the windows open at night in summer and closed during the day.

Please turn the AC off when you are not home, so we can keep rates reasonable for our guests (and to save the polar bears!).

There is a HEPA filter with UV sterilization in the unit. Please leave this running during your stay, and make sure it is on high (level 3) before you check out. The radiant heat means there is minimal if any air exchange between your unit and our living space, but we are taking every precaution to protect our guests and ourselves, including blackout/waiting periods between guests and sanitizer in the laundry. Please leave out any linens used during your stay so we can wash everything between visitors.

Neighborhood highlights

Walk over to Lagunitas for a tour or just have a few pints at the brewpub (unfortunately currently closed- thanks, covid), then stroll through the park. The recently redone soccer fields are across the street, so you might find a pick-up game, and local street vendors selling snacks... Or just watch the geese & ducks in the lagoon!

Yes, you're definitely in the inner city, but keep your head up, your wits about you, and be nice and you'll be fine... We've never had a problem here.

Or, walk southwest past the train and explore Little Village (La Villita) on foot or rent a Divy bike, or hop on the Pink Line to Pilsen for fantastic Mexican food, art galleries, and vintage shops, or stay on the train and head downtown or up north. I've lived in this city for half my life, and am happy to help you find your way around!

I bike everywhere, so if you're up for some urban cycling, I can give you tips. Divy bikes (public bikeshare stations) are all over, and a fun, inexpensive way to see the city!

Note that this is definitely an inner-city neighborhood. You will hear sirens (most of them are ambulances as there are two hospitals within a few blocks)... I've lived on the west side for 8 years now and have never had a problem, and have met lots of lovely folks, but definitely be careful, use common sense, and keep an open mind! This isn't the Gold Coast or Navy Pier- our neighborhood may be a little rough around the edges, but you will get a real Chicago neighborhood experience.
