Juliane James Place is 40 acres of Minnesota awesome located 1.5 hours north of the Cities and an hour south of Duluth — a cozy, yet still modern(ish), “up north” property with hunting, snow sports, fishing, antiquing, & lake access nearby. Our main house is available year round and adjacent cabin is available June-Oct.

We created our space because we wanted to make a place where happy things happened. Pets stay free. Kids are welcome too.

The space
The property consists of a main house, a cabin, and large pond. May through November both the main house and the cabin are for rent.

When you book JJP from November-May, you are renting the main house that can sleep 4 in real beds, and up to 8 if you bring an air mattress or don't mind the couches (they are amazingly comfortable). It's a two bedroom house with a fireplace, large deck and porch, a fully-equipped kitchen, a loft space with a writing desk with a view overlooking the property, a master bedroom (king bed), a bedroom (queen bed) and two bathrooms.

June-October, along with the main house, you also rent the cabin that can sleep up to an additional 8 (1 queen, 1 full, and 4 twins, including a pull out trundle couch) with a wood burning stove and no running water. The cabin bathroom is a cute outhouse with electricity, but is a short walk back to the house for bathrooms and water. You also get all 40 acres complete with a huge pond.

Our place is a relaxing getaway for travelers of all sorts making their way through rural Minnesota. If you are planning a trip to Minneapolis/St. Paul, check out Juliane James to get a well-rounded experience of just how fantastic Minnesota is. We are a wedding venue and vacation rental where everyone is welcome to celebrate. We do not book weddings through Airbnb for insurance reasons and do not allow events or parties on the property through AirBnb. Look up Juliane James Place online if you want to book a wedding with us!

There is plenty of parking room for an RV in the driveway (no hook-up) and for parking your boat if you are planning day trips to any of the many lakes near to us. We have a washer and dryer on the premises. We provide you with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash to use while you are here.

You’re on your own for the internet via your hotspots though. Some day soon the local internet options will be faster, but 2025 still isn’t our year for that yet. :)

Guest access
Entire property. There are many acres to explore surrounding the pond, but not defined paths, so exploration requires some thoughtfulness and safe practices. We provide bug spray and other safety items for the rustic environment.

Other things to note
The property sleeps up to 6-8 in the main house November-May. That includes one king bed in a private bedroom, one Queen bed in a private bedroom, and three couches or a couple air mattresses you can choose to bring. We have sheets, blankets, and pillows for couches, upon request.

We welcome dogs, and cats if you have one ready for an adventure. We don't charge an additional fee for pets; they are included in the cleaning fee. We do ask that you wipe off paws, 2 or 4 legged, before walking on the carpeted areas, and lay down the designated blankets for pets on couches or beds.

The property sleeps up to 12 June-October. Base price for that period is for 8 renters, and is an additional $50 per guest over 8.

During the colder months, the main house has minimal heating in the bedrooms, but the primary source of heating is the fireplace. We provide the firewood you will need to keep it warm, and instructions will be send beforehand on how to best use the fireplace. It does keep the house nice and toasty, with a little bit of effort. Our "know before you go" sent over beforehand will give you lots of information on the fireplace and how to be successful with that. The cabin is not accessible during the winter months, but if there are colder nights during the spring or fall, the fireplace is the heating source and you will be provided with firewood.

Neighborhood highlights

You literally don't need to interact with anyone for days. Our neighbors plow the gravel road leading to the property as well as our driveway, so if we get snow you may see them. Otherwise it's unlikely you'll see anyone else. Neighbors can be called by us in case of an emergency.

There are restaurants and bars in nearby Willow River and Finlayson. Petry's Bait in Finlayson has a lot of food items you might need in a pinch. There is a larger market in Sandstone. We provide a more thorough list of local amenities beforehand for you to check out.

My work: Unique Dining Catering // Juliane James Place
I am Cultural Geographer, the owner of a boutique wedding venue stealthily doubling as a vacation rental in its off time, I co-founded Rentivist, a peer-to-peer sharing platform for your stuff that's smaller than your house. Now I’m the CEO of catering and venue management company. I believe life is comprised of moments in need of celebrating and that we should go to bed happier than when we woke up, even when intense things happen in our lives. I cross the street to pet dogs. I bought my rental property to carve out a space where happy happens and folks can feel safe in the middle of nowhere. I pretty much only stay at Airbnb when traveling.
