Butterfly Cottage at Sunbird Hill, Kibale Forest edge operates entirely on solar energy. It has its own garden within my daughter's 40 acre estate adjacent to Kibale National Park. Julia is a primatologist who spent over 5 years habituating and studying the chimpanzees there. The chimps are not aware of the forest boundary, of course, and often visit Julia's land - especially when the fig trees are fruiting. There is an abundance of birds, butterflies and other interesting creatures.

Crater Lake House is a large house with an open living and dining space at the centre of which is a cozy fireplace. Enjoy spectacular views of Kyaninga Crater Lake and the Mountains of the Moon. This serene getaway is a 20 minute drive from Fort Portal. The lake is clean and safe to swim in, and you can enjoy beautiful walks along the 4 km rim, and/or explore the Crater. Rental is for the full property. There are two ensuite bedrooms, both queen doubles plus extra double sofa-beds, private toilet/shower and your own keys. Watch crested cranes sail by, turacos, busy weavers etc. Walk or bike into Fort Portal, or round the amazing forested lake (which you can swim in), visit next door lodges, tour our forest of indigenous trees, hike the hills. Extra guests?...ask for the large tent. If you have pre-teen children, ask us for deal on the price per person.

Enjoy this stunning location, with incredible views over Lake Kerere and Kibale National Park, with the Rwenzoris Mountains as your other view. There are 2 full time staff to help with washing dishes and cleaning. The cottage is situated on 27 acres of private land with 800 meters of lawn on the crater lake rim - all to yourself. It is a 45 minute drive to the chimp tracking starting point. It’s a great spot to go for walks, runs, bike rides and swim in the crater lakes.
