Seaside Escape: Beautiful, Spacious, Peaceful

SureshRating, 5 stars1 month ago
We had a great time at this nice beach side property. It was very clean, spacious and had great ocean views although it was not a beach front property. It felt very safe in the nights. The walk to the beach was short (just about 5 mins) and there is also a private access to the beach. We enjoyed the bbq grill. Overall, the stay was awesome and we wish we had stayed longer.

The house was perfect for a relaxing getaway. It was clean, the beds are comfortable, the kitchen is stocked and the beach front location can't be beat. Cathy was great to work with and very proactive in her communication. We would definitely rent again.

Beautiful home that was perfect for our family vacation. The driveway was rough, was not prepared for the sand and we got stuck upon arrival, had to park several houses down in order to not get stuck again.

Your guide to Crystal Beach, Bolivar Peninsula

Welcome to Crystal Beach

The laidback community of Crystal Beach regularly refers to this 27-mile stretch of shoreline on Texas’s Bolivar Peninsula as paradise, and not just because of the soft sands and warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Set off from the mainland and surrounded by water, Crystal Beach feels like an easygoing world of its own. Sure, the skyscrapers of Galveston are accessible, but it takes a short drive and an 18-minute ferry ride across a channel to reach them. Here, you won’t find big chain stores, and if the beach ever feels too crowded, you can simply hop in your car and find a quieter spot — it’s legal to drive and park on the sand.

But it’s really the peaceful pace that makes Crystal Beach so beloved. Locals spend their days fishing off the jetty, combing the shore for interesting shells and shark teeth, and playing a few rounds of golf, before capping it all off with a beach bonfire.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Crystal Beach, Bolivar Peninsula

Summer on the Bolivar Peninsula brings quintessential beach weather — the occasional seasonal storm notwithstanding. The long, hot, and humid days are perfect for cooling off in the surf, and sea breezes offer additional relief. It’s also the busiest time of the year for rentals in Crystal Beach, and you’ll likely be mingling with daytrippers from Houston and families on summer vacation. Things can get particularly crowded during organized and unorganized summer events, like the annual car show and campout for SUV aficionados. Instead, visit in late fall or early spring, which tend to be drier, but are still warm enough for sunbathing and boogie boarding.

Top things to do in Crystal Beach, Bolivar Peninsula

Bolivar Flats Bird Sanctuary

The Bolivar Peninsula is recognized as a Globally Important Bird Area and is home to many species of bird. There are a few sanctuaries and reserves along the coast here, including the massive Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, but the Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary is just minutes from Crystal Beach. Keep an eye out for endangered piping plovers, western sandpipers, reddish egrets, roseate spoonbills, and pelicans.

Point Bolivar Lighthouse

The Point Bolivar Lighthouse stands proudly at the southern end of the peninsula. Built in 1852, the edifice has withstood some of the worst hurricanes that have hit this part of the coast, even sheltering residents during two. A dramatic subject for photographers, the iron lighthouse was decommissioned in 1933, and remains closed today, though a local nonprofit is seeking to preserve it.

Fishing

The waters around Crystal Beach teem with flounder, black drum, speckled trout, and redfish. Join the locals and cast a line off the jetty, or go in search of bigger fish on a half- or full-day deep sea excursion.
