“…Alvin’s class was fascinating. I’m a psychologist interested in artificial intelligence and the simulation of intentionality. Alvin showed us how to program an agent that would learn to play a game and get better at it, in probably less than a hundred lines of code. (Of course the code for the game itself was already written). This demonstration was technically quite interesting in itself, intriguing in its philosophical implications, and gave a sense of some of the issues and potentials of machine learning, all in an introductory and accessible way. Alvin was a good teacher, friendly, patient, flexible, funny, and kind. One of our participants was a 14 year old boy, and Alvin made him feel totally comfortable and an equal member of the group. Alvin also discussed his work at Berkeley in self driving cars, and at Facebook on VR and AR, and so we also got insight into where the AI field is going and how quickly. All in all, a tremendous experience!…
