Exclusive Beach House, Shela Lamu, Kenya

CarolineRating, 5 stars1 month ago
We (5 adults) had a great 3 nights at Bahati house. Anthony was quick to respond on chat, organizing airport transfer and post arrival lunch with us. We had a hiccup with the arrival airport transfer which was the boat Captain's fault, but after that the trip was perfect. The highlight is the excellent service by Justin, the chef, and Martin the caretaker who also served our meals. Justin's food was AMAZING. We ended up not eating any meals out to enjoy it and the excellent service. The house is spacious and tastefully designed with relaxing lounge areas on each floor which also invite you to relax. The house is located in Shela and we had a great time getting lost through the streets as well as walking along the beach. It's also about 30 min walk to the Lamu Old town which was a great way to spend a morning / afternoon. Overall a great stay and we would go back in a heartbea One note: The house (and many parts of Lamu) are not very accessible for those with impaired mobility.

Najma’s penthouse

FabriceRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
So the spot is actually AMAZING. It's basically a loft over two floors up super high overlooking the entire town and seeing the sunrise and moonlight over the bay from your bedroom window. Super high quality finish, especially for the price but also spacious and cozy and airy, well personalised and well thought out as well as super accommodating.. I mean, there is a swing in the house. You are very very central while also bordering the lesser touristy part ( the town is small) and get a sense of both the daily life and the charm or the town. Defo get them to come collect you from wherever you arrive and to be honest, you're in luck if this is free, definitely a great set up to wind down from the energy of walking around and chatting to people all day.. of and great kitchen set up too...Thanks again Najma for putting so much thought into it!

Perfect spot to jump off exploring Shela. The location is set a bit back from the beach and more touristy areas, but the apartment is exactly as pictured, very nice! Abdulrahman (Babu) was very responsive as a his and helped us with local recommendations etc. we were collected from the beach having gotten a boat taxi with his cousin Nasir, and taken to apartment for an early check in. All in all perfect for what we needed

Authentic Swahili style villa in the heart of Lamu

NjeriRating, 5 stars1 month ago
Milele house is such a beautiful treat. The feel of the place, the decor and painting are immaculate. Very clean too. I loved the many little chill spots all round the house, the rooftop gives the best view of the island. Jamuhuri is a gem, he ensured we had a seamless stay and Abu walked us around the Island providing such rich and nuanced history. A place I will come back too!

House in the old city with pool, garden & top roof

AsyaRating, 5 stars1 month ago
We absolutely loved our stay. The host was very fast to respond & suggested thoughtful activities for us. The house is well designed, full of Art, books, films to look at. The swimming pool was a highlight. The location is at the heart of Lamu & very accessible from the waterfront. The chef was one of the best we have experienced in Lamu & the caretaker was very sweet with our kids. We highly reccomend this place!

Small family house in Shela

BrendaRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Shela is beautiful with a gorgeous long beach, which gets a bit windy in the afternoon. Jona’s place is on 3 levels and Kahindi, the cook/housekeeper is down on ground level. He will cook if you wish - breakfast alone or also dinner. His BBQ lobster is fab! You can buy from the shops or give him money for food purchase. He has access to the kitchen for his own cooking so maybe some boundaries on timing if you are having a day at home. He cleans and tidies daily. The shower is not heated but not required, pressure fine but not strong. Two king rooms with ensuite, towels and linen good Roof top sitting and BBQ area, down to dining and kitchen and seating then next down, a desk for working if you need to. All houses are close together, so depending on the neighbours, you may be woken early with talking or singing, but that is Shela. Stop over has great spiced tea, Sea Suq has the best Samosa and then there is Peponi for a cocktail and ginger crab - a real treat. Jonas is very responsive

Coconut House, Shela: beautiful home with garden

ValerieRating, 5 stars2 months ago
This was our second time staying at Coconut House, and it was once again fantastic. Stefania is a proactive host with lots of recommendations and a network of local help to make our stay comfortable and worry-free. Lawrence is a wonderful chef who also took care of the grocery shopping and meal-planning for us, and cooked some absolutely delicious meals, better than restaurant quality! The home itself is spacious and spread out, with lots of unique seating areas to enjoy various views, and comfortable beds to relax at the end of the day. We look forward to returning again (and again!) — Coconut House feels like home away from home.

Solar House with a sailboat

ChristinaRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
Tawny was friendly and responded right away to my many questions. Jackson was also great and the chef made INCREDIBLE food. There are quite a few stairs up to Solar House and it's serene up there. Very short walk to the beach, Peponi, or anywhere you'd want to be. When there was an issue with the water flow, the staff solved it immediately and with smiles. We'll be back!! Thank you!!

Exclusive Waterfront Private Villa - Manda Island

DinaRating, 5 stars31 months ago
Feisal's place was amazing. The house sits on its own plot on Manda Island, just a quick boat ride from Shela and Lamu Town. We had a family of 5 adults, 2 kids, a toddler and 2 infants. There was more than enough space with a balcony on each floor and 3 bedrooms. The sea breeze was incredible and the pool did not disappoint. There is a long dock to go to the boat and as the level of the tide varied each day we enjoyed swimming in the sea some days and beachtime on others. Amina the housekeeper and her daughters kept the place clean and helped us with anything we needed. We hired a chef, Yousef, who cooked amazing meals and even grocery shopped for us. This allowed us to truly relax and our kids loved their time on the island..it was a true adventure for them. We visited the Takwa Ruins, shopped in Shela and ate at several local restaurants. The weather was gorgeous and when it rained it only lasted minutes. The internet speed was great both inside and outside and allowed for streaming and movie afternoons when the kids were tired. We would love to return some day!

Mtende House, Shela, Lamu Island

DeborahRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
Mtende house is beautifully charming, each detail seemingly handpicked with thought and attention to detail. From the characterful doors, windows, lighting fixtures and furnishings, to the elevated ceilings in the bedrooms to the breezy dining and sitting area at the top of the 3 storey house, everything about the house makes you feel at home and simultaneously on vacation. The staff were wonderful. Patrick is a terrific cook and assisted by George, everything went perfectly smoothly regarding every aspect of our stay. If you are lucky enough to visit Shela, make Mtende House your home away from home … you won‘t regret it. Thank you Jax for being an amazing host and sharing your special home with us.

#Waterfront view - House or Room

DeeRating, 5 stars1 month ago
Samaki house was great place to immerse yourself in Lamu’s culture. The house itself boasts beautiful Swahili finishes along with a stunning view from the terrace. The location is within walking distance to several local restaurants, land marks and is located near the Main Street where all the local stores are. Moses, the house manager, was extremely helpful. Breakfast was an added bonus, and the provision of different breakfast options was very appreciated.

Green room in Ndege Beach House with pool

KierstenRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
We’ve visited Lamu six times, and this house is by far our favorite—surpassing even some of the most historic hotels. The house is impeccably decorated, with every detail thoughtfully designed by a talented interior designer. It’s clear a lot of care went into creating this space, and it made this our favorite stay in Africa to date. The amenities were fantastic—multiple fridges stocked with a wide selection of drinks (alcoholic/non), coffee stands with milk frothers, filtered water taps, and a small bites menu. These thoughtful touches really elevated the experience. The location couldn’t be better—right on the beach, we enjoyed watching the Dhows sail at sunset. Finding a house with a pool in this prime location is a real gem! The staff were exceptional—friendly, attentive, and respectful of our privacy. Francis, the chef, was wonderful, and the tablescapes every evening were stunning. Suzanne was also incredibly helpful and responsive through our stay. And of we love the dogs!

Help us house, lamu/ shella traditional house

ConnorRating, 5 stars8 months ago
We really enjoyed our stay at Tunusuru House. It is just off the beach front in the centre of Shela, meaning everything is within easy walking distance. Chef Robert and his team cooked exceptional food - some of the best fish that we have ever eaten. The rooftop is a particular highlight - stunning views out onto Manda Island and a very welcome breeze. The house were able to organise numerous excursions and all of our water taxis and were incredibly responsive. If I was being picky, although traditionally designed, the house was a little sparse on furnishings (e.g. there could be some bedside tables), but overall this didn’t detract from the enjoyment of our stay. I’d thoroughly recommend Tunusuru House!
