Neighborhood highlights

The neighborhood is rich in commercial activities, pharmacies, banks, post offices, and various types of restaurants and bars.

On the street of the apartment, you will find the most beautiful shops in the city, including jewelry stores, bookstores, and many clothing stores.

Via Giuseppe Manno is a street full of history related to the events that have affected Cagliari for at least the last seven centuries.

The street, a commercial symbol of the city, still serves as an important connection with the lower part of the city, the Stampace neighborhood, and the upper part with the Castello neighborhood, but it is also a connection to Villanova.

Its up-and-down slope has never been an obstacle to its development, which today is made up of shops.

Long ago, however, it was nothing more than a small path that ran along the hillside leading to Castello and started with a rough staircase.

On that ancient path, the first building of the old hospital of Sant'Antonio di Vienna, also called San Giovanni di Dio, was built, named after the religious order that managed it. The construction was located next to the church of Sant'Antonio Abate, as can be seen from the still-existing porch mentioned in old documents "Descensus hospitali Sancti Antoni."

In the middle of that porch, next to the entrance of the hospital, there was the "ruota degli esposti" (wheel of the exposed) with a bell that the mothers who abandoned their newborns would ring before leaving. In the upper area, there was a cistern for the water supply of the people.

In addition to the Church of Sant'Antonio, also called del Fuoco, consecrated in 1723, in the upper part of via Manno, there was also the Church of Santa Caterina dei Genovesi, which dated back to the early seventeenth century and was destroyed by the bombings of '43.

The street was called Sant'Antonio, and the first section was called Santa Caterina, but all Cagliaritans knew it as "Sa Costa," and this name remained even after 1881 when it was dedicated to Giuseppe Manno and still persists today.

It was between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century that the most important shops in the city began to open on Via Manno, including those of the companies Giovanni Castangia in 1858, Guglielmo Cao in 1878, and Giuseppe Dessì in 1892.

With the beginning of the city tram service in 1915, tram "number one" began to clatter past Via Manno, and the street gained increasing importance for connections to other neighborhoods.

At all hours, it was a meeting place for many young and not-so-young people who walked up and down the street or gathered in large groups, and it was there that loves and important acquaintances were born.
