Port Moluag House, Isle of Lismore

JoanneRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
What a place! If you’re swithering, book it now - you won’t regret it. The bathroom is out of this world with a steam room and handy essential oils, never saw a soul the whole time we were there (apart from a couple of errant sheep) and the balcony is dreamy. The lack of tv threw us initially but actually would’ve been out of place in the accommodation which blends into the natural landscape. We read, played Scrabble and listened to music by the fire. A gem of a find.

What a fantastic stay at Gareth’s! We were greeted with homemade shortbread cookies and chocolate chip banana bread, along with everything you need for a short stay (i.e. coffee, tea, milk, water, etc). You cannot beat the view! What a perfect stay and we highly recommend it.

Beautiful Two Bedroom House, Breathtaking Views

FionaRating, 5 stars1 week ago
We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely cottage in such a stunning location overlooking the Loch and islands with the constantly changing seascapes. The location of the cottage at Geary on the Isle of Skye is off the beaten tourist track, which we found to be a real plus. However there is easy access to all the attractions on the island via some amazing drives as well as the convenience of a nearby historic quaint pub overlooking another beautiful Loch. The cottage itself was so comfortable, clean, very well appointed and we loved the panoramic windows. It also had a cosy log fire, portable heaters as well as underfloor heating. We particularly appreciated the thoughtful personal touches which made it feel like home. It was a wonderful experience and Scottish hospitality at its best. Fiona and Doug (Sydney, Australia)

Beautiful period home on loch, wonderful views

OmarRating, 5 stars6 days ago
Simply amazing. Honestly at a loss for words describing how spectacular Duncan’s cottage is. The place sits high up on a private road overlooking Loch Earn with towering mountains of the highlands visible from every window, surrounded by amazing trees and lush ferns providing the impression of living in a fairytale-like setting. The house itself is lovely, appointed with an amazing kitchen (that oven is lovely!), plenty of plush furniture, fireplaces stocked with wood for cozy evenings, and comfy bedrooms for a good night’s sleep after a long day of adventuring the Scottish countryside. Bathrooms are fantastic as well and the hot water comes on instantly, which is pretty rare for housing that’s 100+ years old. The porch is fantastic for quiet self-reflection and enjoying your morning coffee while the Loch adds a mysterious aura as the mist and fog moves in and out with the rapidly changing Scottish weather. We even could hear Red Deer roaring in the distance.

Highland loch-side, 2 bed house with amazing view.

CristeaRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
Staying at Elizabeth's house was a unique experience for us. It was remote, private, and surrounded by beautiful landscapes and wildlife (we had daily visits from deer, including a stunning giant stag). The house was comfortable and felt like home. The view of the lake and Fort William made the end of our trip truly perfect.

Islands View - Panoramic sea views

AndyRating, 5 stars1 week ago
A perfect place to kick back and chill. Just look at that view from the lounge, and there are windows on two other lounge walls. Always something to just look at. The window from the bedroom is just as good. Literally wake up to that view. Clean, modern and warm - didn’t need the wood burner but nice to know it’s there. Two great restaurant recommendations: The Three Chimneys (about 5-6 miles away) and The Dunvegan (about 9 miles away). They compliment each other perfectly - the former more fine dining, the latter, food perfectly cooked over wood and charcoal. At this end of the island visit Neist Point Lighthouse the Coral Beech and Dunvegan Castle / grounds. A trip to the southern tip of the island brings in Talisker and Torabhaig distilleries both well worth visiting. There’s a couple of comments from other reviews about single track roads. There are lots of passing places and I find the roads just slow traffic down - no bad thing, invariably followed by a friendly wave.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Cass' beautifully and elegantly furnished cottage. The spacious and comfortable rooms were a delight for our week-long stay. We had everything we needed for meal preparation, as well as comfortable chairs by a fireplace and a washing machine. Coming back after daily excursions felt like coming home. We would highly recommend Cass' place and would love to return sometime.

Lovely home base for exploring the area. Beautiful view, and the flat is well decorated and comfortable. The place has all the essentials plus a few hospitable extras. Host provides clear directions and is very responsive. Didn't have a car and it was no problem walking and busing everywhere I wanted to go. Cabin by the Pier - a unique location

StephenRating, 5 stars3 days ago
The Cabin by the Pier is a perfect, peaceful spot for a couple looking for a few quiet days literally right by the sea. The view across the Cromarty Firth is nice as are the myriad sea birds. We were also fortunate enough to spot several dolphins and a seal fishing a few metres out as the tide came in. The cabin was spotless and the kitchen well stocked. Comfy bed too and a good shower. We would love to return at some point. Thanks, too, to Mary for her prompt and helpful communication.

The Black Triangle Cabin

KayleyRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
Everything was amazing, we cannot thanks Giles and Hayley enough. Brilliant hosts, kind and friendly - even dropped us a message to let us know about the northern lights! The cabin was perfect, so clean and homely. Although on their property, it’s extremely private. Gorgeous surroundings and so many horses and ponies - was absolutely in our element. Highly recommend and will be sharing this cabin with close friends and families looking for a getaway! Also to mention, going in October and having low temperatures - the cabin was so warm and cosy. No faults at all. P.S the ginger cat is extremely precious, future guests please give her a cuddle đŸ„°

Your guide to Scotland

Welcome to Scotland

Every corner of Scotland seems to have a dramatic story to tell: This is an ancient landscape marked by crumbling castles, green hillsides where clans once battled, and, of course, deep lochs said to hide at least one mythical monster. The northernmost country in the United Kingdom claims rugged mountains, craggy shores, and cities that look like medieval fantasies. Yes, you’ll probably notice a few kilted street performers puffing on bagpipes as you explore heritage sites like Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, the historic heart of the regal capital. But there’s a lot more to this proud nation than its most visible clichĂ©s.

In the Lowlands, the majority of the Scottish population resides in Edinburgh and Glasgow, the largest city. Together they form an area known as the Central Belt. Where Edinburgh delivers on Scottish landmarks and grandeur, Glasgow gives you counterculture hot spots. As you move into the Highlands, some of Scotland’s most romanticized vistas come into view, with villages wedged into narrow valleys and towering mountains like Ben Nevis reaching monumental heights. As you explore the mysterious ruins, misty islands, and sprawling national parks, you’ll find Scotland retains some of Western Europe’s wildest and most remote places.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Scotland

Scotland is a country known for its internationally famous festivals, culminating in August with the Edinburgh International Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe taking over the capital for a month of performances and events. Summer is also the warmest and driest season, when Scotland’s northerly position makes for long, sunny evenings and a festive vibe wherever you go. Crowds are noticeably thinner in spring and early fall, when you can experience the major cities and tourist sites more like a local. Winter gets unrelenting rain and occasional snow, but you’ll still find plenty of cozy indoor hubs, historical and otherwise, where you can stay warm.

Top things to do in Scotland

Glasgow’s West End

Glasgow’s fashionable and leafy West End comprises several low-key neighborhoods filled with art museums and galleries, locally owned shops, and some of the most celebrated Scottish restaurants. Take a gander at Argyle Street or duck in cobbled Ashton Lane to get the pulse of Glasgow’s resurgence as a cultural epicenter. This is also home to one of the city’s favorite greenspaces, Kelvingrove Park, where you’re treated to views of the iconic gothic architecture of Glasgow University.

Eilean Donan Castle

Cross a stone bridge to a tiny tidal island, where several castles have stood guard since the 13th century. In the early 20th century, reconstruction efforts turned the foreboding ruins into one of the most photographed landmarks in Scotland. Its scenic position at the meeting point of several sea lochs makes Eilean Donan Castle alone worth the detour to the Western Highlands to witness the sight for yourself. It’s a popular stop on the way to the nearby Isle of Skye, a magical place with several of its own photogenic castles as well as the iconic Fairy Pools, a series of waterfalls in the Glen Brittle forest.

North Coast 500

From Inverness, take one of Scotland’s most scenic drives along the narrow, twisting roads looping through the lesser-traveled North Highlands. The 516-mile (830-km) trip, designated as a touring route in 2015, passes some of the United Kingdom’s most remote fishing villages and harbor towns. You’ll see barren beaches, jagged coastal cliffs, and islands just offshore. While you could drive the North Coast 500 in a day, take a slower roll and give yourself several days to sightsee castles, trek natural trails, and maybe even spot the Northern Lights here at the tip of Great Britain.
