Sparrow Hut - a tiny home on a hilltop

EthanRating, 5 stars1 week ago
This was such a great place to stay, the tiny home was cosy and had everything we needed. Beautiful surroundings, we especially enjoyed watching the sunset while relaxing in the outdoor bath. We made some delicious pizza in the pizza oven and enjoyed roasting marshmallows over the fire pit. Highly recommend!

A lovely rural part of the world, we really enjoyed spending the time unplugged and playing the games supplied! Easy check in and beautiful views, although outside was cold with high winds inside was warm and inviting even without the fire. The outdoor bath was beautiful, we enjoyed it as soon as we woke up with a morning coffee.

The Treehouse: Off-grid Retreat

JackieRating, 5 stars5 days ago
Special experience! The weather was bad, which meant we enjoyed relaxing in the cosy space. Besides the amazing house, we loved the walk around the property (about a 30 min circuit) which was so handy for our dog. The extensive boardwalk beside the bush stream was an unexpected delight. As was going to sleep to the sound of rain on the roof, waking to mist in the trees and meeting the resident dog.

Stunning stay. We enjoyed the cottage thoroughly! Loved waking up to the sound of birds singing and the proximity to the lake / doubtful sound cruise. Was so peaceful and the bnb had everything we could need. Highlight was the fireplace that kept us warm around night. Thank you Mary for your kind hospitality as well as offering a later check out. It's an incredible place to "unplug" and relax! It has all the amenities you need, and nothing you don't. Surrounded by nature, it is so peaceful and easy to feel at home, especially at night with the fire going and a variety of board games to play! Can't recommend enough, hope to be back some time soon! P.S. Charlie the dog was an amazing co-host and made our days with his visits :)

The Cottage at WildEarthLodge

ZackRating, 5 stars1 week ago
The Wild Earth Lodge was by far our favourite place on our honeymoon around NZ! The setting is peaceful and the views are even better than the photos. The interior and small touches were perfect, and Pete was so welcoming when we arrived (and Cash the dog). Pete had left us with many items for cooking and having breakfast given the location was remote (the toast in the freezer was delicious). The outside bath was a beautiful touch to sit and look out at the mountains and lambs. We had a very heavy rain storm all evening and the next morning, by the wood burning stove and ambience of the lodge made it such a cozy evening in. If you are in NZ, you'd be seriously missing out if you did not stay here for the night

This is an absolutely stunning piece of paradise—pictures can’t capture its true beauty. David greeted us warmly upon our arrival, making us feel right at home with his local recommendations and genuine chats. The thoughtful design details of the cabin elevated our experience. A special mention goes to the homemade baking, which was delicious. The Fantail Cabin is conveniently located just outside the city, making it an ideal spot for a couples retreat. We thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor bath and our stay. We recommend this gem to everyone. Thank you, David and Christina, for your hospitality

Sandra greeted us on arrival and made sure we were well settled. She was very proactive with communication beforehand as well. The place was so cozy and the view was beautiful. We were lucky enough to have a clear sky night one and the stargazing was spectacular. Had a lovely time doing a quick drive into Featherston and check out all the bookstores and grabbing a bite. The sunrise over the lake was gorgeous. Wonderful stay. Thank you for having us.

Tanekaha treehut

AmaliaRating, 5 stars3 days ago
My partner and I had the best Labor Weekend Getaway at Tanekaha Treehut. The place is WOW, fantastic, such a beautiful experience. The Treehut has all the necessary utilities to make a vacation effortless. If the Treehut is beautiful, the outdoor Shower takes the Cake, nothing more amazing than an outdoor shower. Everything was exactly what we needed for a good recharge. Surrounded by beautiful nature and delightful bird songs, there's nothing that we could ever complain about. I hope everyone staying there will have the same great experience as we did. Enjoy!

The real Gem was the outdoor bath, which was a wonderfully relaxing experience and on a clear evening the stars are amazing.

Your guide to New Zealand

All About New Zealand

For a small country in the South Pacific, New Zealand — Aotearoa, or the land of the long white cloud, in te reo Māori — packs a punch with the sheer diversity of its landscapes and the distinctiveness of its natural treasures. In the stories of the tangata whenua (the people of the land), the South Island was the boat of Maui, who caught the great fish of the North Island using his magical fish hook. His brothers were jealous of his achievement and hacked at the fish, creating the mountains, rivers, and coastline.

The landscape here is hugely diverse, from the soaring, glaciated mountains of the Southern Alps and the central North Island volcanoes to the golden sands of Abel Tasman National Park and the Coromandel Peninsula. The same can be said for the flora: Subtropical ferns and palms pepper the North Island, while you can walk in the shadow of ancient beech forests on the South Island.

New Zealand’s major cities are just as appealing as its scenery. The water is never far from sight in Auckland, which stretches across an isthmus peppered with volcanoes. You can spend a day ducking in and out of hip boutiques along Ponsonby Road, followed by cocktails and dinner amid the reclaimed warehouses of Britomart, and then take the ferry into Hauraki Gulf/Tīkapa Moana the next morning to wander among the vineyards on Waiheke Island. On the south end of the North Island, Wellington isn’t just the nation’s capital but its cultural capital as well, home to myriad art galleries, museums, and the national symphony and ballet, not to mention its proximity to the island’s wine country. On the South Island, Christchurch charms with its English architecture and carefully tended gardens and parks, while mountainous Queenstown is the jumping-off point for outdoor activities.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in New Zealand

Covering approximately a thousand miles from north to south, New Zealand experiences weather ranging from subtropical patterns in the far north to drier conditions in the southern Otago region. It can rain at any time of the year all over the country, but the summer months of November to March are generally drier and warmer, while it is colder and wetter in the winter months of June, July, and August. If you’re looking for a New Zealand rental, bear in mind that school summer holidays take place in January.

New Zealand’s national day is Waitangi Day on February 6. Thousands gather at the tiny settlement of Waitangi, north of Auckland, to commemorate Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), the nation’s founding document. As well as the formal ceremonies at Te Whare Rūnanga (the Carved Meeting House), you can watch as a fleet of ornately carved waka (canoes) paddles across Te Ti Bay. The Pasifika Festival celebrates multicultural New Zealand in the Auckland region each March at Western Springs Park. Events throughout the park showcase traditional dances, songs, and culture from across the Pacific region.

Top things to do in New Zealand

Queenstown

Tāhuna (Queenstown), nestled in the mountains of the South Island, is often dubbed New Zealand’s adventure capital for the plethora of outdoor activities on offer: from jet boating on Lake Wakatipu to horseback riding in Glenorchy and winter skiing in the Remarkables (Kawarau) Range. You can catch the Skyline gondola up to the famous viewpoint and grab a bite to eat, then loop back to town or hike along the Moonlight Track up past Ben Lomond and all the way around to the Shotover River. For a more sedate day, take a paddle steamer across the lake or go wine tasting in the Gibbston Valley.

Rotorua

As well as geothermal wonders, world-class mountain biking, and stunning lakeside scenery, Rotorua is one of the best places in New Zealand for visitors to encounter Māori arts and culture. Since the 19th century, members of the Te Arawa tribe have set up Māori villages where you can help paddle an ornately carved waka across the lake, watch performances of traditional dance and song, and enjoy the tender food from a hāngī, or pit oven.

Fiordland

The breathtaking beauty of Fiordland National Park prompted UNESCO to make the remote southwest corner of New Zealand — Te Wahipounamu — a World Heritage site. Head to the tiny lakeside town of Te Anau to access boats and shuttles into the park. If you’re driving, the road to Milford Sound is amazing — make sure to stop every time there’s a sign to make the most of each viewpoint or take a scenic mini-walk. The Milford Track is a four-day hike that many New Zealanders aspire to experience at least once in their lives. You can also take a boat cruise from Milford Sound to see the stunning reflected beauty of Rahotu (Mitre Peak) and hear the roar of Bowen Falls (Hineteawa).
