Peace and quiet

Experience a simple, sustainable getaway in our unique hand-crafted eco cabin, nestled within a tranquil forest garden on the Black Isle. Fully equipped for a short stay or an extended escape, the Green Tourism Gold rated cabin sleeps two people and is perfect for eco conscious travellers embracing slow, simple living. Whether exploring the Highlands or unwinding in nature, the cabin offers the perfect balance of comfort and simplicity where you can connect with the nature around you.

The space
We designed and handcrafted Coll Cabin to be the kind of place we’d love to stay, and we hope you’ll love it too. Nestled in a private glade within our woodland garden, it offers a peaceful retreat (our other smaller Siskin Cabin is discretely tucked away in the same woodland).

Coll Cabin sleeps two in a comfortable double bed and features cooking facilities, a compact dining area, and a bench that doubles as a small desk/workspace. The en suite includes a compost toilet and a simple bucket shower. While off-grid for both electricity and water, the cabin offers plenty of eco-friendly comforts for a low-impact, yet comfortable stay.

A wood burner, fueled by firewood from our woodland, keeps things cosy, with organic cotton bedding and towels provided for added comfort. In the kitchenette, you'll find essentials like oil, salt, tea, coffee, and a double gas hob with grill and oven, plus a small fridge/freezer. Fresh drinking water is supplied via a foot pump and can be heated on the gas hob or wood burner. The shower is an old whisky barrel, where you heat water and use the 12v pump for a quick rinse.

The stable door opens to a small porch and deck with seating, offering views across the wood and fields. It’s perfect for forest bathing or spotting Red Kites overhead. There’s no direct WiFi, but 4G may be available for those who wish to stay connected—or simply enjoy a digital detox. Solar-powered lights and USB charging add to the cabin’s charm.

Coll means Hazel in the Ogham tree alphabet, and represents wisdom and creativity, making it the perfect space for unwinding or focusing on your next project with a compact but creatively inspiring desk space looking out across the woods.

Guest access
Guests have exclusive access to the cabin and its private deck, with plenty of space to explore our small woodland along meandering pathways and a boardwalk. Our other cabin, Siskin, is also located within the same woodland.

We offer free off-road parking, with a short walk through gardens and woodland to the cabin. For cyclists, there’s a secure bike shed, and nearby cycle paths make it easy to explore. For those seeking a car-free holiday, we’re just a 20-minute walk from a bus stop with connections to Inverness.

We live on-site in the bungalow and are usually available for assistance, though we respect your privacy. Some areas of the garden around the house are private.

You’ll be staying at The Warren Forest Garden & Eco Cabins, a 2.5-acre Permaculture Learning Action Demonstration (ScotLAND) garden. Part of a network of homes and community projects across Scotland, we showcase sustainable living practices through Permaculture. The cabin itself embodies these principles, built using low-impact materials like locally milled larch, sustainable timber, sheep’s wool insulation, and a green sedum roof, among other eco-friendly features.

Our regenerative forest garden is a haven for plants, trees, and wildlife, and guests are encouraged to explore. We also offer guided tours of the gardens for a small "pay what you feel" donation.

Ideal for those interested in responsible tourism, nature, and low-impact living, we’re perfectly located for those exploring the North Coast 500, but we encourage guests to slow down and discover the Black Isle’s hidden gems—cycling, dolphin watching, woodland walks, and peaceful coastal villages like Cromarty, Avoch, and Rosemarkie.

As a Green Tourism GOLD rated member, we’re committed to sustainability, and we hope our guests leave with ideas for incorporating more eco-friendly practices into their own lives.

Neighborhood highlights

Coll Cabin sits in the woodland of The Warren Forest Garden and Eco Cabins, our 2.5-acre permaculture-designed homestead in Kilcoy on the Black Isle. The site is surrounded by rolling farmland, woodland and a few neighbouring houses. We have one other cabin tucked within the trees, and our home and gardens sit nearby.

As we are in a rural area, there are no shops, cafés or restaurants within walking distance, but you can reach them easily by car or public transport.

Coast, forest, mountain, loch and glen are all within easy reach by bike, bus or car, offering stunning scenery and abundant wildlife. Nearby Inverness and Dingwall provide transport links, places to eat, nightlife, entertainment and activities. We are about 20 minutes from a bus stop with regular services to Inverness, making this an excellent base for a car-free holiday using public transport or cycling.

A well-stocked farm shop, Black Isle Berries, and a garage with a small convenience store are located at nearby Tore, about two miles away. There is also a small farm shop at Garguston Farm, with further convenience stores in Muir of Ord and Conon Bridge. Larger supermarkets and other amenities can be found in Inverness and Dingwall, both around seven miles away.

Please note that we are in an area of working farmland and a rural estate, so there may occasionally be the sound of farm machinery or other activity nearby. While we aim to create a peaceful retreat, the countryside sometimes has a life of its own!
