Please look at the photos for the washer/dryer set up as it's the old fashioned way where you wash & Rinse in two separate tubs, old fashion hand wringer and clothesline to dry. Just like grandma use to do!

Guest access
There are many canyons and side canyons and a year round creek with a variety of trees, wild flowers, cacti, birds, animals and trails you have access to. There is a horse trail on the property and a wonderful dry wash to hike that will take you into many side canyons. During the monsoons, there are wonderful waterfalls cascading off the cliffs and spectacular lighting storms that roll through in the summer. If you like climbing, the red rocks have many areas to discover and alcoves with thousand plus year old ruins. I am also a site monitor for 8 ruins in the backcountry that is accessed from our property. This is an area that is protected from public access but your stay here will give you that access.
I have an agreement with the others involved here in the community that in order for me to host Airbnb I CAN'T HAVE KIDS OR PETS. The community is a protected Wildlife Preserve which adjoins “Canyon of the Ancients National Monument.” All of us living here don’t have pets for that reason. We also keep the cabin/bungalow allergy & dander free for our guests and the person that cleans who is highly allergic to dander.
If you need help in finding another place close by that takes pets I would be happy to check a few places.

Other things to note
BEWARE: YOU MAY WISHED YOU STAYED LONGER!
Please check out "GUIDEBOOK" under this listing for many things to do ahead of time to help you plan & prepare your trip. I've listed many options that may help you if you haven't been to the area. There is also a pocket guide book in cabin for hikes into the "Canyons of the Ancients National Monument" which is part of our private ranch. It's a good start to get you into some beautiful areas right from your front door with many miles of private trails to explore.

Neighborhood highlights

It's a great part of the area that you don't see elsewhere. It has the Ute Mountain that you view from your cabin (10,000 ft.). You are in the high red rock desert (5600ft) with pinions and old juniper trees that are estimated over 900 years old. There is an historic cemetery in the canyon you hike to. The original road was washed-out along with homes in 1911. The old road used to be near the cabin. There are archeologists excavating on the property's Anasazi ruins that date back thousands of years ago. McElmo Canyon was known for its produce and took 1st place for peaches in the Saint Louis World's Fair in the 1910's. There's a book in the cabin on the settlers that lived and died on the property.

My work: I had been a wedding photographer in Durango, Colorado for 20 years and have retired from doing big weddings and now do photography with the emphasis on my art and photo shoots for guests here in the red rock canyons.
Lives in United States
Originally from San Diego I now live in the 4 corners area for the last 20 years in beautiful McElmo Canyon. I Love exploring, hiking, riding and the outdoors. Me and my partner Steve have created a safe haven here for animals in the wild and don't allow hunting. We have an organic garden that is shared with the community here and we live in harmony with the land that surrounds us. I am grateful & blessed everyday to live here and share this part of the world with others. I'm fortunate enough to be a steward of this magical place. Mark
